My Cat is spraying and Im going crazy....please help!

Hello all, I was just on line trying to figure out what Im going to do about my cat TURBO! I ran into this forum and signed up right away! Briefly I am 14 days away from my scheduled c-section with my second child (my first is 5) We have had Turbo and his brother Mickey since October when they were 12 weeks old! I got them at a grocery store and they have yet to be seen by a Vet because of financial reasons! Turbo has always been the dominate one of the two, and I recently moved my mom in who brought her 2 pund poodle, unaware of how this would cause my cat to behave I slowly tried to introduce them, once Turbo started spraying I asked my mom to keep her dog in her room at all times and outside when necessary! I feel horrible for him but until my mom gets on her feet (after the baby gets here) I can not do anything about the dog! I am debating having him nutered because Ive heard that may not fix the problem! Mickey his brother is not spraying yet and Im hoping he will not start! My husband, son and I are in love with these cats and the thought of seperating them or getting rid of them is really depressing, however I am more concerned that the babys things will get sprayed! This evening I was reading my son a bed time story and turbo walked in squatted on his back pack and began to spray i spanked him so that he would stop and he kept doing it anyways! So out of frustration I yelled at him and he ran off! I know that yelling at him will not help the situation, I just get so agrivated that my house is becoming a urine dump! Please help me with any suggestions you might have! Thank you all in advance!-Kristin

The only thing that will fix the spraying problem is to have him fixed!

They most likely would not have even started if you had them neutered back when they were 3- 5 months. But since you waited, they begin to display the normal unneutered male tom cat behavior that is typical and expected.
I am really suprised your males do not rip each other up fighting over territory. Even though they are brothers, it doesn't matter. Lucky for you there.

Anyway, the ONLY way to fix this problem is to neuter them. There are low cost and even free clinics all over the place. Google search for one or tell us your city and state and we can help.

Also buy some Feliway plug ins and put them throughout your house. They work miracles but nothing will help your cat stop spraying then neutering them.

PLUS by allowing them to remain unneutered, their risk of getting testicular cancer is greater and greater everyday. Another reason why it is so important to neuter and spay, you do not want them to have that risk do you? If affording a simple neuter surgery is too much then think of what it wil cost if they get cancer and all the treatment and vet visits. That is major $$$.

Thank you all for replying and welcoming me! Ill be sure to post pictures! I called around and got an affordable vet to do the nuetering! (yay) Im still nervous that it wont matter because the dog still lives in the guest room with mom, but at this point if I waited for her to move out hed be over a year and since this is a new thing for him (1.5 months) Maybe he will stop! Im going to have the procedure done on the 10th, so ill let you know how it goes! Thanks again, take care! -Kristin

Welcome to TCS Kristin! one thing- if you're getting Turbo neutered, make sure you get Mickey done also or you will probably end up having the same problem with him

YOU POOR THING!!!! I have 1 child and that is a handful! And your pregnant too! I hate to say it but everyone is right. Neutering them both is the only option. I don't know about your state.... but up here in Philly we have a site called spayandsave.org and they link up with vets in our area that will do the spay/neuter with a coupon for 1/2 price. And you are lucky cause you have boys...girls are twice as expensive. But the discount price for males is $25-$50 per cat. Where the vet usually charges about $50-$100 per cat. Call your SPCA & Humane Society's they usually have clinics where you can get it done at a discount price... with a little planning your problem may be solved! Good luck with the baby! And with your kitty's too!!!

Welcome to the site! I agree with the others, you need to get your cat neutered. I think there is a good chance it may solve your problem and it's somewhere to start. I'm glad you found someone that was affordable in your area.

Good luck on your delivery!
