My cat is a male red tabby about 8 years old.He is in perfect health.Above both ears he has a small area of skin that looks like he's been scratching.The rest of his body is fine.I never actually see him scratch though.It's not getting any worse or any better.He dosen't have ear mites.Is it possible that his own nails are scratching him?

Very possible - it's spring and it might be some allergies.
Keep an eye on him and if you feel he should be looked at by your Vet by all means do that. It's better to err on the side of safety.
