I have a few outdoor cats who were never friendly and never really liked people but Iv been trying to make them friendly so now there sorta starting to like me. Well before the mom cat had her baby's she would let me pet her and pick her up so I thought that meant she must like me.
Now it's been almost 2 weeks since she had her babies and she wont let me near them, but she'll still let me pet her and pick her up, just not to her babies. I really wanna try to make the babies friendly like house cats so that way I can give them to a pet store or to people who I know that want one. But if the momma cat isn't gonna let me near her babies that will never happen and then the babies might have to go to the pound, I have way too many cats as it is so I cant keep them.

So my quesiton is, is it normal for an outdoor cat to wanna protect her babies and not let me near them? Are they still a little young for me to be touching them and thats why she doesnt like it?
Also today I got one of her babies when she wasnt with them and I took it inside with me for a little while. When I gave it back to her, aboout 20 minutes later she started moving them to a different spot. Could that be because of me? Or could it be it was time to move? This is the first time she moved them. And it wasnt the first time Iv picked up one of her babies. Would it also be a bad idea if I moved them to a different place? Im asking that because the place she moved them isnt in the best place.

This is also her fist litter of kittens. I think she's about 1 1/2 years old.

So if anyone could help me I would really appreciate it.

They should be inside, even if its a safe basement or garage...

Is there any way you can catch the Momma, and bring her and her kittens inside for a few weeks? Then you can close her in a bedroom, and she won't be able to take the kittens out of your reach.

Catch the Mom first, before you get the kittens.

I agree with those who say not to touch, move or take them away for any time at all right. Now only will she probably move them again, possibly to a place you can't find, but there is a chance she might even decide to abandon or worse, hurt them, if she feels they are in danger.

My advice would be to contact a local rescue group. They have traps and can help you trap them all, and make sure they get to a foster home and all get spayed, shots, and adopted.

If you go to www.petfinder.com, and click on rescue and shelters in the upper right hand area, then put in your state, you'll find a list of rescue groups you can call.

Good luck.

Below is a link to groups that work with feral cats. I would try to locate one that is in your state and see if they can provide you with a trap and assist you with trapping mom and kittens. Unfortunately a female cat can become pregnant again as early as a week after giving birth, so the earlier you are able to trap her and her kittens, the better it will be.

Well I actually brought the kittens inside for a while and I had the mom cat come in and feed them. She was actually ok with that. But then I started to pet them a little and hold them while she was in front of me. I think that was really stupid of me to do because she moved them again! But I do know where she moved them to, and its not in the greatest place. Its getting really hot outside and where she put the kittens is even hotter! This probably want the greatest idea either, but I tried bringing some back in the house because it was just too hot for them to be outside. But before I could get them all the mom cat went back to her babies. I have 2 of them and she has 3 right now.

So Im not sure if I should just give her back the 2 kittens that I brought inside or if I should still keep them inside and try to bring the other ones inside.

Best thing is to have the whole family together...and preferably indoors. Set mom up with a room of her own and let her do the work of raising the kittens and then have her and any other outdoor cats spayed so she doesn't get pregnant again.

Ok I'll do that then. Well at least I'll try anyway. Im not sure if the mom cat will be too happy about staying in 24/7. But I'll try it and see how it works.
