Am I right in thinking that when kittens are only drinking mum's milk that they only do wees? Number two's only start when they are eating solids? Is this correct?

One of my 4 week old kittens had a bit of a poop on his bottom today and I was surprised to see that as he is not on solids yet.

No, I think they poop even just on mom's milk. Mine are 4 days and I've seen poop already (not long before mom cleaned it up though) It's rare that you'll see it cuz the momma will "clean it up" pretty quickly.

Thanks for clarifying that!

My little rugrats are now 4 weeks and spend more time away from mum than they do with her....the toys and climbing up my legs seem far more appealing to them now than mum! So I guess that is why mum did not have the chance to clean it up quickly.

If they are 4 weeks old, now's the time to put out a small litterbox for the kittens. They won't use it yet, but they'll start to play in it, get used to it, and since they should start to wean within a week or two, mom can teach them to use it and you'll have a good, easy switchover with minimal accidents.

I put out a small litter tray last week...and they have all taken to it (thank god!)...however, they do try to nibble on the cat litter too! They have just used it for wees though.

congratulations!!!

I love those milestones!

When my Rocky-Rockette "figured it out," she was the first of the litter to do so. I got so excited I started chanting "rocky! rocky! rocky!" She got so excited she rolled over on her back (in the dirty litter of course lol) and started kicking her legs all around.

Just a small reminder just in case, make sure you don't use clumping litter for a few months, especially if they're tending to eat it. Once they stop playing in it and stop ingesting it, you can return to the clumping litter.
