For those of us who are/were married or are planning their weddings, what did your reception food consist of? The girl I work with is going to a wedding next month and they're having a big barbeque after the wedding, with dogs and burgers and stuff. The mother of the groom is horrified and wants it at a reception hall with all the fancy fixings...what did you have?

Personally, for my first wedding, we got married in Pearl Harbor and went back to our apt building afterwards with friends and went to the top of the building. (it was on the 29th floor, great view) We had pizza, pop, chips, wings, etc.

For my one with Jerry, we rented a reception hall and had a buffet, chicken, beef, parslied potatoes, veges, sausage and peppers, rigatonis......the basic stuff. My mom and sisters baked their little hearts out and we had a nice cookie table.

I personally don't think if it's fancy or casual, it should be fun!

For my wedding reception, it was held in my aunt's backyard, and we had ribs, chicken, these potatoes that I love made with cheese and cornflakes
rotini salad (pasta salad) and a couple other things, I can't remember. We had it catered, but the caterer was my aunt's neighbor and he used my mom's recipes for most of the food
plus we had a couple kegs and a "bar" set up. Had two cakes too, a small tiered one for the pics and cutting and then a large casata (strawberry filling) sheet cake, that I didn't even get a piece of! the only cake I got was the cake shoved in my face that went down my dress
I'm with you Susie, the only important thing about a reception is that it's fun!

We had sausage and peppers, Italian rolls, assorted meats and cheese, and my homemade macaroni salad. Snacks were potato chips, pretzels, corn chips, and donut holes.

We planned on having 5 pizzas delivered as well, but there was plenty of food already, so we cancelled the order.

You're right - it should be fun!

We had a "fancy" reception with passed hors d'oevres and a lot of appetizers to start during the cocktail hour, a sushi station and a martini bar.

Then, the dinner was salad, crab cakes, and a choice of entree (chicken, fish, surf and turf and a vegetarian entree). Dessert was wedding cake (yellow cake with Baileys Irish Creme buttercreme or chocolate with raspberry filling) AND there was a dessert buffet with ice cream, cookies, cheesecake, etc.

There was SO MUCH FOOD most people had to roll themselves home

But, the place we got married had amazing caterers and the food was, according to most people, even better than at some of the best restaurants in our town!

It was an awesome day-- I wish I could do it all over again...but I dunno who's gonna plan it and who's gonna pay for it!

All of your receptions were much more exciting than mine. I have to try to remember back that far. There was a choice of baked stuffed chicken or Filet of Sole, minestrone soup and salad, I think green beans and a baked potato. Cake and ice cream were served for dessert.

well, i've never married...but at my sister's wedding, an afternoon one, we just had cake, punch/coffee, nuts, mints, crackers & cold cuts. my youngest brother's first was also in the afternoon - cake, punch/coffee, nuts & mints. his second had what we call 'heavy'hors d'oeuvres - little smokies, etc. my oldest brother had a fancy wedding - catered, not 'do-it-yourself' like the other 3. it was evening - they also had beer & wine, as well as a couple of buffet tables.

Our reception was at our apartment, and we had cold cuts trays with rolls and such, but the main thing consumed was beer.
Everyone pretty much passed right by the food.

Sure, actually its my Mom's hand-me-down:
Macaroni Salad
1 lb pasta, cooked "al dente" (I use penne or something large; Mom uses elbows)
1 med onion, chopped
1 large tomato, chopped
1 pickling cucumber, chopped (1/2 other cuke can be used, but many of them have waxed skin. I prefer to peel it if the skin is shiny)
2 cans tuna in water, drained well
Mayo (to taste, probably a cup to a cup & a half)
S&P
Combine ingredients. Chill.

Wow, it has been so long (almost 26 years) that I barely remember. We had two ceremonies on the same day. After the civil ceremony (required by law here), everybody in the wedding party (about a dozen people) went to a fancy restaurant for lunch. I recall that we ordered the food ahead of time, and believe it was fillet mignon, with a variety of side dishes served "family style". The church ceremony was at 4 p.m., and another 30 people or so joined us afterward for a catered buffet style dinner at my in-laws' house, with hot and cold dishes. What I really remember is that we had 7 (or was it 8?) wedding cakes, all made by my m-i-l with the help of a co-worker, and that many of our guests ending up spending the night, so the two of us spent the night on a cot in a storage closet.

We dined on surf and turf at our reception (the guests ate hot dogs). Oh, come on, I'm just kidding - about the hot dogs, that is....

I've only been married three years, so you'd think I'd remember, but I don't. The reception was catered by the hotel. I think we had three entree choices, four sides, two salads. There were also 4-5 horsdoerves, but Chris and I missed out on those. And our cake. And we had two hours of an open bar followed by a cash bar, which is kind of tacky, but no one seemed to mind.

Mine was so long ago I don't really remember, except that there were mashed potatoes, because you MUST have mashed potatoes at a wedding! (At least I do) I went to one this weekend where they had wild rice, it tasted like cardboard! I do remember that I had an appetizer table brought out around 10pm or so, so people who weren't at the dinner could eat something, so they didn't get too drunk! Everyone really liked that we did that!

It's been more than 28 years but I remember well. Well actually I don't remember what we ate, but I remember we (the band and I) went a Denny's in Tampa Florida after the ceremony.
That evening we had dinner at the Holiday Inn in Plant City, Florida before the band went on stage for the evening. We threw my bouquet and garter to the folks at the Holiday Inn that night.
