I'm absolutely gutted. It was hard enough getting myself prepared for it. Nismo started displaying signs of being in heat on Saturday and her behaviour has changed dramatically, trying to escape etc. Last night Sleeves was cleaning her and she lifted her butt up and started grunting and when he walked away from here she cried and rolled around the floor so I know without the doubt she was in season.
I called the vet this morning and they said they cannot do it for another 6 - 8 WEEKS! Because the lining of her womb will be too think and would make it impossible, which means approximately June!! Obviously they know whats best but I had prepared myself for it, now I'm going to have to do it all over again.
I asked if her crazy behaviour would continue for that long and she said she should calm down, but does this mean weeks of this? I thought I'd always read on here it only takes up to about 8 days?

Sorry you had to cancel, Lauren! I had to postpone Molly's due to her heat cycle!

It seems ever so strange that they won't be able to do it until June though!
Molly had her spay at the end of the week when her cycle had finished!

She had no problems with the op either, so I can't see that the lining of her womb would be too thick!

It does seem a long time

Do you know how long between each heat cycle? I just want to put the poor little thing out of her misery

Just checked my 'book of all knowledge'
and her cycle should be finished by the end of the week! As for frequency, as she's an indoor cat, she can have heat cycles quite often!

As a general rule, it can be a couple of weeks or so until the next cycle!

If I were you, Lauren, I'd call your vet! I really don't understand why they want to leave it so long?!! As I say, Molly was done at the end of her cycle and was completely fine!

Oh yeah and Nismo is probably off her food, due to the heat cycle!

Yep, just found out here that she can be in heat again withing two weeks of her last cycle!

I think this is why my vet spayed Molly at the end of the week when her cycle was over, so that we could prevent her from having another!

Ok thanks guys, if it wasn't for you I probably would have sat down and taken the answer as gospel. I just called one of our vets other surgeries and said 'If my cat went into heat on Sat when could she be spayed?' they said beginning of next week!!!
I called my vet back and spoke to someone else who apologised profusely that I had been given the wrong info and she is booked in for Monday! Thank goodness for that! They said she would be in and out of heat a lot between now and June and that it was totally unfair on her and didn't know why I had been told this!!!
Can you imagine if I had just left it???
So she's booked in for Monday which is fine because I have the day off, I'm going to finish work at 12 on tues to come home and make sure she doesn't bite her stitches.
I'm just so releaved. Phew!

At the kitty's beck and call
I echo what the others have said Lauren, phone the vet again. When Lily went into heat, our Vet said to make an appointment for the next week (figuring it would be over by then) and if she was still in heat they would be flexible and just rearrange for a couple of days later. There was no question of waiting 6 - 8 weeks.

Good luck - I hope that you get it done soon. There is nothing worse than preparing everyone for this and then having to rearrange is there.

So pleased your sorted now Lauren

Like Beth said theres nothing worse when you've prepared yourself for it only to have it cancelled

I was like that with Sophie. She was due to be spayed at the end of the week, then on the monday she had an upset tummy which i took her to the surgery for. They gave her an antibiotics shot along with some "good bacteria" paste similar to the Actimel drinks that humans take, but because she still had a temperature a couple of days later they still wouldn't spay her

She was running around like a loon as usual but i had to listen to the vet at the end of the day.

Ha you would think! Obviously my vet doesn't train their staff appropriately! I just can't wait til it's all over. I actually feel a lot better about getting her spayed since I've seen what going into heat does to them.

My vet is open on Sundays and Bank Holidays! Maybe Lauren's vet is similar to mine?

It'll be such a relief for you both when all this is over!

Plus, it gives more time for the sweeties to arrive!

Yeah its ok they are still open on Mon. Its quite good because it means I'll be in to look after Sleeves when he's searching high and low for his baby sister.

Thats good!. I know mine is a 24 hour surgery, but not sure if their open bank holidays for operations, or if it's for emergencys only?.

Saying that i got Sophies reminder through for her yearly checkup next month and when i rang to make the appointment they've let me book her in on a saturday even though it's only for emergencies because they know i'm at work.

I like vets who accomodate you like that. That is honestly the only bad experience I've ever had with this surgery, they are just lovely normally. I suppose the girl just got her wires crossed, no harm done now.
I'm quite looking forward to making a big fuss of Sleeves all day

I know, and it always starts putting doubts in your head with them as well when something like this happens until you sit and think like you have that it was only a one off.

Monday will be here and gone before you know it
