There is a smell in my House that I can not get rid of because I can not find it. Yes I notice it because I have a fetish I have to have a freshener in every room of the house and they are all refilled when empty. My house is usually really nice citrus smell, but today it is sour foul smell. Not like animal smell but like a piece of rotten food is hidden somewhere and really died
Anyone have idea on where to look or if they have been through the same thing.

Hmmm, do your animals (or children) ever drag in dead carcasses of other animals and leave them lying around?

Since I have never seen your house, it is a little hard for me to tell you where to look

Could your sons have left food around? Could the dog or cat have had an accident?

You may want to spend some time looking for it before the smell gets worse.

According to my husband... the zoo
That can be very frustrating..

I am very careful to keep my litterbox clean. It is right by the back door where just about everyone comes and goes. Anyway, I'm freakish about people not smelling the litter box.

anyway... a few weeks ago, I could smell it and I made sure I kept it clean, took out the litter in the bag on a more regular basis, kept the area swept etc. it was driving me nuts because I knew it was the litter. Well, the next weekend when I went to mop, I took everything out, and when I lifted up the litter box, there was a nice puddle of cat pee!!! When someone peed, they shot over the box, but the way the box is, it captured and held it underneath.

Good luck - hopefully you'll find it sooner or later.

Done all of that and no it isn't the animals box or accident... I found a Twinkie after I lifted the trash bag out of the can. I also found something green and weird....My son took the trash out and then left it with no bag for a while then put the bag in over the food
It is awful. No clue how long it has been like that. He takes it out every Saturday. I do it the other days but we where gone for dinners and it was not full GROSS.......

My mom had this problem, it was horrible. Finally we figured out that someone took frozen meat out of the freezer and left it on the top of the fridge. It was horrible because it slowly started to smell, and it slowly permeated the platic baggy it was in. We could not figure out where the smell was. We think it was on top of the fridge for like two weeks. My mom thought a rodent had died in the kitchen!

I knew someone who had done that at his high school. He locked some frozen meat in a locker and left it there. Apparently they had to move classes away from that area because the smell was so bad.

Did you check in your fridge for anything going bad? Have you cleaned your sink lately? Are there any plants that might be covering a dead rodent? Has one of your kitties messed where he shouldn't have?

Hope something helps! I hate it when I have a smell and cant get rid of it.

I like the Easter Egg theory. Last time that happened here, I had opened a can of cat food, thought it looked weird and threw it away.
Ewww, bad idea. Within a day the kitchen smelled like something died.

Don't you love it when your garbage can smells so pretty!?
My husband will pack the gargabe SO full just so he doesn't have to change it and then it will start to stink because of all the cat food cans and left over cat food
.Makes you want to cry by the time you take it out because the smell makes your eyes burn! I've learned to start taking it out when it is getting full. (it's so much easier then smelling nasty garbage!)

Every blue moon or so, a mouse or a rat can die while inside a wall or under a floor. The smell can be very difficult to pin down. Over time, they just dry up and the smell subsides.

This happened once in my retail store, and for a week it was maddening. Took a while with several box fans out the back door to air out, but it eventually went away.
