I am considering bringing cats into the family. My preference is to bring a kitten rather than an older cat just so that we can all watch them grow.
My dilemma is whether to get one or two.

I work full time, and my thinking was that if there were two from the same litter they could play with each other, and not get lonely during the day. However, not having had cats previously I wonder whether it is too much to take on and perhaps it would be better to get just one.
What would you advise?

Hi,
Welcome,

I'd say get two, as you say they will have each-other for company when you are at work. Two are no more trouble than one and not that much more expense. If you look around the site you will see that most of us have two or more cats.

The cats house, we just pay the mortgage..
Hi there! Welcome to TCS!
I would advise getting 2 at the same time, without a doubt.
We got Sleeves last year on his own as a kitten and then realised he needed a playmate for during the night (while we are attempting to sleep
) and while we are out during the day. We got Nismo in December and she just fitted right in. I can't remember how Sleeves got by without her. We should have definately brought home one of Sleeves' brothers or sisters, infact, no we shouldn't...then we wouldn't have Nismo!!

I agree, two would be better. My poor Stanley used to spend the day all by himself while I was at work. Now I have Sadie and those two are practically inseperable. They will lay there in a chair and groom or play fight.

At the kitty's beck and call
Hi there
we're so happy to welcome you to TCS. I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay with us - we're one great big family and you'll find loads of friends here. If I can help at all while you're finding your way around TCS just click on my username and send me a Personal Message - I'll do what I can to answer your questions

I would join the ranks of those who recommend getting two kitties together. As they will always have been together you will avoid the problems of introducing another kitty if you went for a second kitty later. They will be company for each other

When you get your kitties don't forget to post piccies

Welcome to TCS! 2 cats or kittens is prob. your best bet but I would actually consider getting grown cats or older kittens as first-cats since they don't need as much supervision. Cats continue to grow & develop socially, so even if the cat is mature, you will be continually be amazed, entertained, etc! ...Cats

For 29 years I have had one cat at a time but since last year I now have two kitties and I couldn't be happier. Although there have been some bumps in the road, they keep each other company and I really think that they are happier to have each other when I am not home. I would definitely say get two.

Hello and welcome to The Cat Site

You will love it here

warning - it's addicting!

ps. I vote for two kitties. I also only had one at a time for years, then just this summer ended up with two strays at the same time - and it was GREAT!
