One of the kittens is not doing good at all. It's very small, doesn't have the food in his belly feel like the others. I bought some kitten formula but he is too weak to even suck. I dropped some drops into his mouth and he doesn't even seem like he swallowed them.

I noticed it last night and again this morning when twice he roamed away from the litter. He just has a very pitiful litle groaning-type cry. Mom is not rejecting him, she pulled him back when he crept away and she keeps him warm but he is not eating!

Is it too late? I can't seem to get him to take any food!

Try rubbing karo syrup on his gums, and then try supplementing him again, or putting him on Mom. They can go down hill very quickly. There may be a congenital problem that you can't see, and you may not be able to save him. I will keep the kitten and you in my prayers.
Keep us updated.

I'm waiting to hear back from a neighbor if she has any karo syrup. It just does not look good at all though. He is so weak he can hardly cry or move and even though mom is not rejecting him she does not object if I move him out of the nest and try to work on him.

bummer

If you have pancake syrup in the house, it will do the same thing. The idea is to get the blood sugar up.

Or if you know how to make a simple syrup with sugar and water, that will work as well as karo also.

Another thing that would work is a small tube of piping gel you would use to write on cakes (the color doesn't matter). I know of someone who used to use that instead of Karo for a diabetic cat.

i agree with all the above! i was going to say the sugar water too, it will bring is blood sugar up, which might stimulate him more, so he is able to eat. if you do get him to perk up, try a syringe of kitten formula, a few drops at a time.. i did that with prue for week when i first got her home, she was so frail and weak.

It seems to be working!!! I got the karo syrup from my neighbor and the little guy perked up and he started to suck! Thanks SO MUCH for the PMs from the 2 ladies about sugar and water syrup! the personal advice was extremely thoughtful and I would never have known had my neighbor not had some karo!

My teenage sons came home from school today and when they learned I'd been working on that little critter all day, one of my boys (13) went downstairs and warmed up dry washclothes in the dryer over and over kept bringing them up to wrap him up in dryer warmed washclothes while all of us put karo on our pinky fingers and rubbed his gums. I actually thought the little guy was dead in my hand today but after the karo syrup and the warmed clothes he started to suck on our pinky fingers and then he actually latched onto the KMR bottle!

I called a friend of a friend in Mass. who is a cat rescue person and she told me to also fill an empty 2-liter bottle (soda-pop bottle) with warm water, wrap it up in cloth, and put it in the nest next to the weak one. That's where he is at right now.

I am very amazed that he is actually latching on this evening when earlier today he could not even swallow and I thought he had died in my hand. The karo syrup is what really made the turn-around and the extra heat to his body is boosting him too! I still don't know if he'll make it but it really made a huge difference!!!

I am VERY appreciative for the advice
thanks so much.

I don't know how he'll do tonight, but he is sure doing better than what he was doing this morning! yay!!...fingers crossed!

I've rescued some kitties in my day but this one is really really LITTLE. It is very heartbreaking to see it suffer so much and I don't know that I can rescue a brand new newborn but I am trying my best and hope it will work. It was very encouraging to see and feel him latch and suck this afternoon after a whole morning of him just wanting to roll over and give up. So....we shall see, I don't know how he'll do overnight or how he'll do the next few days, but he seemed to bounce back real nice this afternoon and I hope he'll keep going and make it.

Keep him in your thoughts and prayers!!

I completely understand where you are comming from. I rescued several kitties that were "older" but still had to be bottle fed...this was my first two with their eyes still closed.

Best of luck and I hope that all goes well. I will keep you in my prayers, and I know that you will do awesome. Keep us posted when you get the chance.

HUGS TO YOU AND THE LITTLE ONE(s)

The poor little guy did not make it. I got up at 1am to change the warming bottle and give him more food but he was already gone

I had laid him up next to the hot water bottle and last thing I saw before I went to bed was mom reaching across the rest of the litter who were on her tummy and she had her paw on the little guy's chest

Oh, I am so sorry for your loss. At least you know you did EVERYTHING possible to give him a chance. I'm glad he was able to be near his Momma and in a loving home for the short time he had.

Condolences to you, your kids, and of course the Momma cat!

Thanks so much for your kind thoughts. It just wasn't meant to be and I feel okay to the extent that he at least slipped away while he was warm and with his litter and mom. I don't think he suffered too much, at least that is what I hope!

Mom tried to move the nest this morning (probably in reaction to losing one of them), so that was hard too because she wanted to move them all under my bed. I had to go head-to-head with her on it and made her keep them in the closet nest. She finally settled down and has been snuggled with them all day. I've been feeding her the KMR I bought yesterday and I hope that helps give her a boost!
