I'm so mad at my boss right now and just need to vent!!! This week's issue of the paper just came out and a story I wrote about the 20th anniversary of an organization that provides pregancy testing and information to low income women was reduced to a photo and caption. The fact that they're celebrating their 20th anniversary wasn't even mentioned. That was the point of the story, along with the fact that they've recently expanded some of their services. I put a fair amount of time into this story - drove an hour there and back for the interviews, a put a couple of hours into writing it. But that's not what's making me so mad. It's the fact that I have good relationship with this organization, they do wonderful work and they were counting on me to write this article. They're going to be so disappointed. It wasn't that long of story, so if space was an issue, the editor could have held it for a week or two and it would have been fine. She didn't even tell me she wasn't going to use it!
This is yet another of example of my editor's failing to consider peoples' feelings and doing something which, in my opinion, is completely unprofessional. I'm going to let her know how I feel, but not until I calm down. I'm going to tell her we need to run the story in a future issue. Then, I'm going to call the director of this organization and apologize on behalf of the newspaper. It won't be the first time!
Thanks for letting me vent.

I am so sorry Eileen
. It sounds like you were doing a GREAT service to this agency, whereas your boss is doing them a great disservice.

Are there other local papers that you could maybe offer the article to in a freelance sort of way?

Thanks, Amy. It's possible. I may try sending it to our daily newspaper.

This probably wouldn't bother me so much if it was the first time something like ths had happened. I was just talking to one of my coworkers this morning about how we feel like we're always apologizing to people for the editor's actions, or lack thereof.

I know just how you feel!! This has happened to me a couple of times, but really got me was last year when I wrote a story about a wandering pod of orcas in Puget sound and most of the story (and the important bits) got cut because the editor forgot to jump it. I was SO angry and I worked hard on that story too.

and I hope the story gets run soon!

IA. If you need me, just meow..
I'm so sorry you have to apologize to that company. That is not right. I hope that you can get your story run in another paper, or even another magazine, that'd really make your editor look like a complete idiot now wouldn't it???

Thanks so much for your support!

That must have been so frustrating for you. Sounds like a great story!

Argh, that must be enormously frustrating. You put in all this hard work and she just cuts it without so much as an explanation. Is it because the content could offend some conservative Catholics? I hope you can sell the story on.

Hey everybody,
Thanks again for all the support. Glad I waited a while and calmed down before talking to my boss. Her explanation was that she didn't "see" the story in the editorial folder, just the photo. But, the story was there! She wouldn't have had the info for the photo caption if she hadn't seen the story.
Anyway, I pushed things a little and she agreed to run the story in a future issue. I still have to call the organization and explain, but they'll be a lot more understanding knowing that the story is still going to run.
Thanks again!
