I think you've hit the nail on the head (i.e. that you can't single out Americans, it's People in general) and since the total US population outnumbers that of many other countries, naturally there will be proportionally more Americans to be noticed
-- either favourably or unfavourably. But unfortunately it's human nature to remember the jerks and if one doesn't have much experience with a particular group, then the rest of it may get tarred with the same brush. I know lots of Americans, and by far the majority are perfectly nice, decent people, who don't fit that "Ugly American" stereotype in the least.
