Has kitty changed diet ??? is kitty getting lots of soy wheat or chn??

Since it is a sudden change, I would get him checked out by a vet. Changes in diet (including sneaking food or treats that he shouldn't get) can cause gas problems, but if there haven't been any changes that you know about, it would be best to rule out other problems.
