My persian girl is about 26 days pregnant, she eats a lot more than before.
for the dry food, I feed her Purina kitten food, which contains 40% protein. I leave the food there so that she eats whenever she wants.

She loves Iams pouches, so I feed her one pouch a day.

My husband said she might have difficulties in giving birth if I won't stop feeding her like this.

Am I feeding too much?

Thanx everyone

I feed my cat dry food all day long (Natural Choice- Indoor kitten food) and wet food morning and night. If she seems really hungry I even give her some wet food in the afternoon. Cats are not like people and usually know how to monitor their food intake. We have 5 very plump kittens and the momma is pretty skinny. It takes a lot out of them to be pregnant and nurse the babies. Good luck, I can't wait to see the baby pictures

I am of the opinion that pregnant queens should build up their resources for what lies ahead in providing 100% of the nutritional needs of a growing litter - for the entire 4 to 5 weeks weeks after delivery. She will need to eat more to ready her system for this. She should be eating a high-quality kitten food in both canned and dry varieties, as much as she wants, whenever she wants.

Cutemini.....I would switch brands....looking at the ingredients for Purina Kitten Chow:

Ingredients
Poultry by-product meal, rice flour, corn gluten meal, wheat flour, beef tallow preserved with mixed-tocopherols (source of vitamin E), soybean meal, ground yellow corn, fish meal, brewers dried yeast, animal digest, calcium carbonate, dicalcium phosphate, phosphoric acid, salt, choline chloride, taurine, zinc oxide, ferrous sulfate, vitamin supplements (E, A, B-12, D-3), riboflavin supplement, niacin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, biotin, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, pyridoxine hydrochloride, citric acid, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of vitamin K activity), calcium iodate

Notice that Poultry By Products is the first ingredient.....I would look for food that has Chicken or lamb or beef or Tuna or other form of Protien as the first ingredient. "by products" are not good protien.

In the same price range you are paying for the current dry food, you can buy Wal-Mart's premium dry food brand, Maxximum Nutrition Kitten Food (dry formula) with Chicken as the primary ingredient. You really can't beat it for the money and the ingredients are far better than what Katie posted.

Hi,

I am a persian breeder, feel free to PM me anytime. We do not feed our girls excessive amounts of food, as it can cause problems with delivery in that the girls get too big....too fat...I mean. Are your persians registered? Were you planning on breeding them? Where did you get your persians?

Some persians will only eat when they are hungry and others will eat whenever there is f.ood available so you have to be careful. I feed three meals a day roughly, no more no less. They only get hard food, no wet food. They rarely get treats because if I give them treats, they only eat the treats and not the food that is good for them and get over weight that way.

I would put her on IAMS kitten food....that is what all my females eat while pregnant, it really helps them and the babies get everything they need while pregnant.

Gestation for a cat is an average of 63-65 days. Her nipples should be slightly larger and pink by now. Her appetite may be affected by now but not usually. You really notice a difference around 35-40 days gestation.

Were you planning on breeding them. You said you never saw them mate but you know what gestation day she is on?

I hope this helps you out. Like I said, PM me anytime and I will answer your questions to the best of my ability....

oh, and we usually let our pregnant queens eat as much as they want....it helps them to be ready to give birth and to help nurse them once born.

Wow, that's cool to know. I'll have to pick some up for the outside kitties. I feed them Purina kitten chow - about a bag a week, and I would love to feed them something a little better and not break the bank!

Thanx a lot everyone. really appreciated.

PassiquePersian, I got my girl from a breeder, and yes she is registered. I was always wanting to be a persian breeder, so she is my first queen, and the breeder offered me a stud service. I've been having another spayed persian female for 2 years, and now just started my own breeding.

so, you never give your queens wet food? why? just dry food is enough?

thanx

I have tried to give them wet food but they are not big fans of it....they are picky eaters. I do give them KMR sometimes when giving birth to help give them a boost of energy and when they are nursing as well. They love that.
