I know the risks of not spaying cats, but how high are the chances that a healthy 6 mos. old kitten and a cat around the age of 3-4 yrs will er, end up passing away during or, after a spay...?

The chances of the cat dying of Pyometra (uterine infection that unspayed cats get) or breast cancer (also a risk for unspayed cats) is MUCH higher than dying from the operation.

It is so routine and the most experienced procedure a vet does. The chance of something going wrong is very minimal, risk increases with age. Anasthesia is only a problem if there are underlying medical conditions, normally occuring with elder kitties. But your cats may have to go under for dental work at some point in their life too so it really is very routine task with very rare problems.

The anasthesia they use nowadays wears off really quickly too.

I have had cats all my life. I never lost one to a spay or neuter. I did have a cat die in childbirth once, though, and it was pretty heartbreaking.

I have volunteered at spay and neuter clinics. Last year I think about 300 cats were spayed and neutered, with no deaths. Think of all the deaths prevented, by preventing so many births!

Go read some stories on the pregnancy board here at TCS, and see if you want to risk an accidental pregnancy in your babies.

I interned at a vet clinic in high school. Spays are one of the most frequent surgical procedures that a vet does. It's basically a routine for them. Spays and neuters, spays and neuters. And I've never seen a single animal die on the table or in the post-op cage afterwards.

Thanks guys.
They wouldn't end up pregnant as they are strictly indoors, but I just want to weigh the risks of each side...
Most likely they will be spayed however I'm going to have a talk with my vet also.

you actually never know some animals go to get there teeth cleaned and end up passing away. if you dont spay a cat then there are higher chances of that cat getting diseases but i dont think the age matters just talk to your vet

Make sure you weigh the spay against the chances for certain cancers (such as ovarian) and pyometra:
