At work, they recently installed something called LANDesk management on all of the computers. It shows a little clock down at the bottom of the screen, that can very easily go unnoticed. The talk at work is that they are spying on us. I clicked on the little clock and clicked on "status" and it says "waiting for a console connection" and it also says "not connected". Does anyone know anything about that stuff? Are they spying on us?

These programs serves couple of purposes. The main purpose is to help IT guys to connect to the network or individual computers to solve problems/install softwares remotely so they do not have come in. It can also be used as "monitoring" program. The IT or BOSS can see exactly what you are doing on your computer. I am not too sure of this program but most of these type of programs has a logging program. It will record what you did, are doing and save it in a file and send it to the Boss or IT. However, I do not know if it is set up that way on your office network. Since you have an icon on your launch bar that tells you if they are connected or not; you will know when they are watching you/monitor the system. So, just don't do anything bad while they are connected
. If I am the Boss, I would hide the icon so you won't know if I am watching you or not. They are ways to bypass these type of things but then again, when they can't connect to your comp, they will ask you why.....
Hope this helps

So, anyone doing anything bad at work? Surfing xxx sites? Junk emailing? Installing games? Or crash the network all the time?

Sure I belive you.

How many computers do you have in the office? I would think this is mostly for the IT guys. This will give them control over who can do what. Your manager will have more access over the network than you. There are things they can do and you can't. But monitoring is just another side benefit for the Boss. There are always ways to bypass it if you need to.

I have no idea how many there are. It's a bunch. (That didn't help did it? lol) I hope it's just for the IT guys. I don't want me or any of my friends to get in trouble for anything. Not that there's anything I could get in trouble for! Maybe I should just shut up now before I dig myself in any deeper.
Thanks for the help.

Ahhh we have it at work too... according to the IT dept it:

Downloads security updates to all comps at once
Allows them to do software upgrades and updates automatically from the server
Monitors software licenses (eg make sure you aren't d/l games)

It can also be used to log in to the network (for the IT peeps) from outside the actual network so they can be lazy and work from home as long as they have a decent net connection (which of course the IT peeps do)

Oh and don't forget the side part of tracking everything we do!

Here's the web site link to give you and your coworkers a piece of mind:
LANDesk Management Benefits

If they were REALLY spying on you, they wouldn't put it right in front of your face. Most of that software is behind the scenes in their server room.

Thank you so much everybody! This gives me hope that maybe they're not spying. We all had to slack up on email chatting because they tend to get pretty personal. Three of us once even did a little truth or dare email game for a while in spare time.
And the flirty emails to and from a certain salesman that works down the hall have slacked up too. But like I said - we are all innocent here! Working very hard, constantly - all the time!

Just be careful. Many of the emails might be monitored and sent to the boss, in most companys. Just be careful. (don't bad mouth your boss
).

I set up systems for some companies and the boss wants this monitoring function. Just be careful.

Oh trust me, I'm being careful. Most of us have gotten kind of nervous about it since it started. And then some people are just ignoring it. But, just in case, I'm going to try my best not to do anything I could possibly get in trouble for.
