has diarrhea again. And I am very, VERY frustrated with the vets here. I have learned, through my searching through the yellow pages, that most of the vets in my area take care of horses, cows, and dogs, and apparently have no hope for a premie kitten. I realize that it is slim for a premie to make it. They don't have to remind me.

I treat my animals like my child. I was so upset by the time I called the last vet, that I lost it and said, I don't understand...I am basically waiving money in your face and you refuse it??

They retaliated with saying that premies are high risk. Many tests give a false result, even in normal newborn kittens. We don't want to take a chance on a lawsuit.

THE *%$$#** NERVE!!

I do have a vet that I take my other animals to (full grown), and he has helped, but basically has no hope, did give a shot of antibiotics, but we've still got mustard runs.

I thought about worms, but he said that he's too young for wormer, to wait until he's at least 4-5 oz.

He did suggest that I could be overfeeding. I feed about 16cc of formula per day. But I don't want little man to starve!! I've been giving about 2cc of pedialite, which he said was good. We aren't dehydrated, and we are moving around quite a bit, especially when he knows I'm there. He doesn't cry unless its potty time, or I'm burping him.

Maybe I'm just desparate, but I'm not giving up hope.

Anyone else have suggestions

How is the weight on him. Keep us posted on that. Also try to call a vet out of state then they are usually willing to help

I usually weigh at noon, but I did check this morning in case there was loss. We weigh 3 oz, up from 2.9 oz yesterday.

Forgot to mention that he weighed 2.3 oz at birth.

Which was another issue. What is the average weight gain? My usual vet said couldn't give me a straight answer. I'm considering it good that he's gaining.

Today is his 1 week birthday, but I guess since he's 1 wk premie, it would be his 0 week birthday.

From what I know weight gain should be ½ ounce every day

Wow, bless you and little man for your hard work. And Thank God he's gained some! I can't stand doctors that offer little if no hope and then don't try to help. Seriously, a vet is supposed to HELP animals, even if there IS little hope...that's when you should especially try to help them live.

I think you've already proved them wrong if he's lived this long! That's truly amazing. I think the diarreah is just from the formula, maybe? I heard that sometimes formula can do that. At least he's not dehydrated, though.

Keep up with the wonderful work, kittnldy!

Unfortunately, sometimes it is the same when a human baby is ill. You can't use the same medications as for older kids, because infants process them different.

I have a litter of 3 week old kittens, raised by a loving Momma cat. They aren't gaining 1/2 oz per day...often just 0.2 oz. I figure so long as they are gaining, it is good. They all seem healthy and active.

If the vet thinks you should back off on the formula a bit, try that and see if it helps.

And remember, having a kitten seen at the vets office may expose them to illnesses from other kitties who were seen there...they may be afraid of that as well.

Premie kittens are a specialty...if you have mainly large animal vets in your area, they just don't have the knowledge to help! It's like asking a pediatrician to treat an old person...their knowledge just won't help!

Do you have any cat rescues near you? They may be able to give you a referral to a good cat vet...or maybe one of their foster homes has experience with premies.

Thank you guys!

The lady at the pet store also rescues, and is the only one in the area unfortunately. She was impressed at how well he is doing. She said that many don't make it a week. She refered me to another vet, who gave me another another formula to try, and thought that I was doing an excellent job with him.

I weighed him at noon today (regular weighing time), and he is 3.1 oz.

Still keeping our fingers crossed.

That's fantastic! He's still not out of the danger zone, but as long as he's gaining, that's awesome.

Oh, I don't know what the average weight gain is, but my kittens, who were born on monday, have gained about .3 ounces a day, or so...well, Crash gained about .7, when I weighed him last night, but I think .3 is about average, I guess.
