We're in the process of moving..and I'm completely confused about something:

If we have to move out on the last day of the month, but we can't move into our new place until the first day of the next month...What do we do on that one night when we're "homeless"? Where do we put all our stuff?

I know it's a weird question, but you guys are usually pretty helpful. Maybe I'm crazy but I don't get how it works

Well, WE just talked to the current Landlord, and asked if we could stay just that last night because we needed to. You could most definatly ask either landlord to stay in one place. Im sure they would be fine...either way.

But otherwise..I guess if we're talking like serious literal kind of where are you going to stay as if the landlords said "absolutly not", well first I'd swear at them both for being heartless....ORRR...you can always just leave at midnight. lol..cuz that's like perfect. It's the beginning of the new day that you could move into the new place, and it's the end of the past day. It'll all work out for ya!

Hmmm, never really thought about that before! People seldom leave/arrive bang on the day of the 1st/last, especially if it falls in the middle of the week. Most landlords should be reasonable about this. The problem would be if you left on the 1st, and people were trying to move in on the same day to your old apartment.

haha thanks, that midnight thing is a good idea..the only thing is, he told me to leave "midday". And, he's mad that we're leaving so he won't give us a break for one day!

What about at the place you're moving into? Often tenants will ask if they can come by early and store stuff here.

Usually you can work it out with one of the landlords or the other. One of mine let me in I think the 31st. Often the other people will move out early. Your best bet is to try the landlord you are moving in to first to see if you can move in on the 31st after the old people move out, they should be gone by that night. Other wise tell the old landlord you have the place until midnight that night, and you will be moving your stuff out that night, too bad.

My stuff lived in a UHaul parked on the street in front of my new place, and I spent the night with a friend. I had to be out by midnight and then couldn't get back in until 8AM, so I was homeless for 8 hours.

If I couldn't get a break on the landlords I would try the uhaul and then if no friends will let you stay with them maybe ask a cheap hotel and sneak your cat in if they don't allow pets.

We've always been able to work something out.
Usually though we have a place secured before the lease is up. Most landlords are pretty flexible and don't have anyone move into your old place for a week or two. They use that time to tidy up things.

There is a popular service now where they drop off a storage unit for you to load your stuff into and they will take it when you are ready for storage and they will deliver it to your new place when you are ready. I think this is a great idea for people in your exact situation! Very common in college students too...

Otherwise if your landlord if strict you could have them prorate you that extra day.

We've always been able to start the lease a bit early and have it prorated. We moved in here on the 23rd, for instance.

what esgirl said for me too.

I've never seen an apt ready for new tenants within the same day after the old ones leaves. Every apt I've seen is repainted, cleaned, repaired, etc...where I live know it is always left empty for 2-3 wks after the last one moved out and then a new tenant can move in "early" and pay the proration as said.

I would think they would want to paint and stuff before the new tenant comes in..but both the place we are moving from AND the place we want to move to..say that they get a new tenant in right away the next day..That seems strange to me

See, where I live the rental housing market is COMPLETELY NUTS, so they actually do the repairs while the old tenent is still living there and they do the cleaning in those wee hours between midnight and 8AM. We (me and the kitties) had no choice but to stay with Ian for a night...and actually, they stayed there for an additional night, until I could get things SOMEWHAT pulled together.
