My female cat gave birth to two kittens yesterday and the second cat didnt make it. It came out not breathing and lifeless so she is only left now with one kitten. Now my cat is acting strangely, we have a drawer set up with her and her baby kitten in my bedroom but whenever i leave the room she has to follow me all around the house and she keeps meowing at me and walking in and out of my legs like she is trying to tell me something. Arent mother cats supposed to stay with their newborn kittens at all times? Any adivce on why my cat is acting really weird?

Miranda....it's not unusual for a first time mom to leave her kitten to spend time with her owner. Best thing to do is probably confine her with her kitten into a room and stay there will her for a while. When I fostered a mom and her kittens, I confined her in the bathroom with her food, water and litterbox. Also, it will be very important that your new mom remains indoors only and away from any intact cats until she has weaned her kitten and can be spayed.

Confining her is the best solution. And since she seems to want you to be around, if you can confine her in a room where you spend most of your time, that would be optimum. I like and use an extra-large dog crate for this. They are easily folded up as well as moved and can be set up anywhere in about 10 seconds. They are easy to clean and sanitize as well. In the extra-large crate, there is plenty of room for Momma and Baby and you can let her come out for short bursts throughout the day to use her litter, eat and to stretch her legs.

I am sorry to hear of the little lost baby ... I hope your girl and her remaining kitten will continue to do well.
