Hello... I am a new member and need some help!

I have had my cat for about 1.5 years now... I raised her from kittenhood. She has always been a very social cat, she is quite attached to my mother and I and follows us almost everywhere! She stays with me in the morning while I get ready for work, and in the evenings she is always around us, or at least in the same room. Quite literally.... she's always been like my shadow and is always by my side (even when taking a shower... I swear, she's in the bathroom lying on the floor waiting for me!). When I come home from work, I just call our her name and she would ALWAYS come running out and greet me at the front door. She has always been this way.... except for now!

We have noticed an extreme change in my cat (Bella) during the past 2 - 3 weeks. She no longer stays with us or follows us around....... in fact, I barely see her anymore. She spends her entire day hiding in various parts of the house... usually she will go down in the basement and hide out there all day. Otherwise, she will be hiding in one of the bedrooms upstairs underneath the bed. Nothing will get her out. I call her name and she no longer comes running out. I go to feed her and she doesn't come running to her food bowl. She will spend the entire day hiding out somewhere and we don't see her at all anymore. It is a complete change from the way she used to be.

I have no idea what sparked this sudden behaviour change in our cat, and it is bothering me quite a bit. She doesn't appear to be ill or sick.... she is eating her food normally and using her litter box normally too. She just doesn't want to come out from hiding spots at all! She's become the "invisible cat"! Can anyone offer some advice or any insight into what is going on here? Thanks!!

I completely agree with Renae, this type of sudden drastic change is your cat's only way of asking for help. Help would be a vet visit and pronto, even if you think she is completely healthy. Cats mask pain easily, unless you know what to look for they become sick quite quickly and hide it well.

Oh no! What type of illness do you think it could be? I never thought she was sick because her eating habits are normal, as is her stool. I don't know what kind of illness it could be.

No... she is fixed and she's also an indoor cat so there would be no way for it to be pregnancy.

Poor thing I hope she isn't sick. I think a vet appt is necessary.

There is no telling what illness your cat might have. It could be an infection of some sort, FIV or FeLK if she was exposed to this as a kitten, kidney problems, diabetes, an injury that you haven't noticed....who knows! But, your vet will be able to take a small amount of blood to test for infection or illness and will do a thorough exam to determine whether there are other things going on.
Please do take your cat to the vet right away. Some of these problems can be treated easily if caught early, but can be very difficult to treat if not caught early enough.

I think I have actually diagnosed what she has...... it's called "Feline Hyperesthesia" ----- for sure this is it. We had also noticed the strange "skin rippling" on her back and tail area for over a month.... and thought it might have been fleas. After fleas were ruled out, we had no idea what it was.

She wouldl run furiously around the house for no reason at all, as if a ghost is chasing her. She would be sitting quietly one moment.... and then within 1 second she would just charge from one end of the house to the other like a crazy cat. This behaviour had been around for over a month.... but just recently it's been accompanied by her wanting to hide out in different parts of the house. From what I have been reading so far, it is a syndrome with a lot of unknown causes.... I will have to take her to the vet to see if there is any treatment for it though.

It's not something that would normally turn her into a total hermit from being a total leech... let us know what the vet says please.
