Our Momma cat (Rory) has four little kittens (Snow White, Precious, Blessing, and Jack) a little over a week old. Is it safe for Rory to wear a flea collar while the wee ones are so young? Thank you.

NO - take it off. Remember the flea collar contains poison and the kittens could lick it or chew on it and get sick or die.

Why is the cat wearing one? Is she an inside/outside cat?

Rory is not wearing one right now, not since before the births. I was very leary about putting one on her so I thought I'd ask. A couple of days ago I found 2 fleas on Blessing, but they are not there now.

Rory is an indoor/outdoor cat by the way.

Thank you for you response GoldenKitty45

Cats can go into heat and get pregnant again as soon as a week after birth. You may want to consider making Rory indoor only for a few weeks until she can be spayed, lest you have another, bigger litter soon. Things may not go so smoothly next time. Just a heads up.

Flea collars are dangerous at the best of times. Please consider getting Advantage or Revolution from your vet for flea treatment. Cut up your flea collar and put pieces of it in your vacuum, then after vacuuming empty the bag outside to help keep your place flea-free.

We treat Bijou and Mika once per month with Advantage from late April until October since we allow them outside on harness and leash. In fact they have an appointment to meet their new vet this Saturday and get their flea treatment prescription for the summer.

Pfred....since we want this to be Rory's only litter...best thing to do is to put her on a sabitical from the outdoors until her kittens are weaned and she can be spayed. Once she has been spayed...she can once again enjoy the great outdoors.

Not only is it a matter of her becoming pregnant again..but fleas can be a death sentence to young kittens...so best not to risk Rory bringing them inside.

I have never used a flea collar because it is poison. I use the advantage and it works good. Never seen a flea.
