Ok, I'm getting conflicting advice, so I thought I'd see what you
knowledgeable types think.

I got two semi-feral sisters, age 2.5 to ease my mourning after
Tigger (19, love of my life) died from bone cancer in January of
this year. The two sisters, Trick and Treat, are dears, but NOT
used to humans. They are coming along nicely (and I've gotten
lots of good advice in the feral forum), but my need to love
and be loved and touch NOW is overwhelming them.

So, I thought I'd get a third, older cat, one proven to be a sweetie
and lover, to take some pressure off of everyone, and model the
human/cat relationship we all know for TnT, who just don't get
it.

So, here's the question. I've decided on an older (6-10) year old
cat, because the two sisters act so in tandem I think they'
overwhelm a younger cat. But do I go for male or female?

I've only had females, and I tend to prefer them, as does my husband,
who is afraid of spraying behavior. (yes, I know, neutering, but still ...)
One of my friends knowledgeable about cats says that females get along
better than males/females, another says mixture is better.

???

Well I have two older males that were about 2 (one is 6-8 months older than the other). Then I got a brother and a sister last fall that were semi-feral and 13 weeks old. They get along great with one of the cats. The boy is very social with us, but a bit skittish of newcomers and loud noises. The girl is extremely shy, but she gets along with her brother and Rocky, one of the older cats. So I don't know if she is modeling the others cats behaviour around humans or not.
If I were you, I'd get a easy-going cat, probably a male that is def good with other cats.

If your sisters are adult cats, I would suggest an adult neutered male.
Female cats often have a harder time accepting new cats into their lives, while males are normally a bit better after the initial stages.

I would get a male. Your chances of them getting along will be better.

I find that males are more social/loving then females. And females usually accept a male into the group faster then another female. This was true with all my cats whether or not the females were spayed.

A male that is neutered will rarely spray.

my Chip, adopted a month ago, has never sprayed, even tho he was in a new environment with 3 cats who weren't all that welcoming! look for a laid-back, non-confrontational male, i'd say.

If you go to a shelter the people who work / volunteer can usually tell you all kinds of things about the cats, which ones are lovey and get along with other cats, which ones don't, all kinds of stuff. I think the individual cats' temperaments are more important than their gender, especially if they were fixed before sexual maturity.
