I dunno if I am putting this in the right place or not... sorry.

Here's a question for those of you who understand genetics. If it is one of those
questions just yell at me and I will behave.

Ok here is the situation. One of our kittens is starting to poof out like a medium/long hair cat. He looks like a little fuzz butt which I absolutly adore. His mother and father are both short hair. However his mother's father (The kittens grandpa) was a big fat fluffy medium/long haired guy who I met when we adopted her.

Now my question is weather or not it is possible for this little guy to be medium/long haired like his grandpa when he has two short haired parents.

I hope I explained that where it would be clear.

Yes. It was a hidden trait but was still in the father's DNA, apparently it was dominant to whatever the mother's gene was, so yes it's possible

Definitely possible. In bengals you can go many generations and suddenly a long haired bengal will show up (even in the best of breeding programs). Its because bengals were crossed with domestics early on, which carry for just about everything. So under the right conditions (both parents carrying the recessive gene) a long-haired bengal will occur.

So by all means its very possible, especially when some of the parentage/history is not known.

Another possibility, seen frequently in bengals, is a fuzzy stage. This is where the fur gets longer and puffy, like its growing faster than the kitten. This only lasts for a while until their new fur comes in and they are no longer fuzzy. I don't know if this really occurs with other cats but its another thing to keep in mind.

If it is anything like us humans then it is passable.

At around 3 to 4 weeks old or so, many kittens (especially those born in the cooler months) will develop what I call the "fuzzy-ugly" stage where their fur is thicker, almost coarse to the touch and a little longer than normal.

If you only have one fuzzy little one, this might be the reason.

LOL I think Skittles hit this stage way late... The move from CA to Utah I think did it but wow she was ugly for a few weeks now she is beautiful.
