First of all, i would like to just Hi to everyone

My question is, yesterday we went and got a 3 year old cat who was going free to a good home, well i love cats and it was my first one i have ever had, we got a litter tray and everything she needs, she seemed to have settled in very nicely, she is a lovely cat, thing is, she was pining to go outside and explore,i have a lovely huge garden, and there is plenty of trees behind my house, she sat up my window meowing to go out, so i think i have made the biggest mistake of my life letting her out, cos im afraid she wont return as she doesnt really know us, and her previous home is approx 12 miles away, does anyone know if cats return to there previous owners?or will she come back to my home when she hungry, etc? Im am so upset i wont see her ever again and i dont know what i was thinking when i let her out.

I would really appreciate some advice on this as i am so new when it comes to looking after cats.

Thanks in advance

First of all welcome to TCS!!

As far as your new kitty, the first thing I would do is call the people that you got her from and tell them the situation, chances are she may have returned there, also ask some of your neighbours to keep an eye out for her...once you have her back at home I would suggest getting a leash for her so that when she wants to go outside you will have the peace of mind knowing she is safe.

welcome to TCS

yes I would contact the previous owners and let them know the situation. Cats often return to their previous homes.

I will go against the normal views of the site here and say that the UK & Aust have different views as a whole on indoor/outdoor cats to those from the US. I personally have no problem with letting them outside if you live in a good area (ie: lots of land, not necessarily suburbia), no predators etc... When she does come back home dont let her outside for a while no matter how much she meows at that window. First of all let her get 'used' to her new surroundings inside the home and of course let her get used to you.

Please keep us updated

I'm so sorry. I would definitely contact the previous owners . Also I would ask if they could give you a picture so you could put up flyers in the neighborhood, etc. She is unfamiliar with your house/yard so it is easy for her to get lost.

Thankyou all so much for your help,i will contact the previous owner, but as she lived 12 miles away and there are motorways near there i am extremly concerned now, i hope if she has made her way home, she is safe and well.
If i manage to get her back, i will keep her under lock and key till i know she will come back for sure,i will keep you all posted.Thanks.

Fingers crossed

Hi! Welcome to the cat site! I am so sorry about your kitty, how long has she been gone? I agree with everybody, advise the previous owners to look out for her, just incase. But fingers crossed she'll be outside your door miaowing to come in in no time.

I had an older Cat, we had only had him for a day and I decided to let him out aswell, the previous owners let him out all the time so I figured it would only be far...Please understand that "most" cats are extremly smart in this sense, All a cat needs to do is have a peek outside through the window and they remember there surroundings. BamBam got out and came back meowing at the front door the next morning...I was amazed...
And I was on the other side of the city , not anywhere near his old home...Have faith Lulu will come back! Can u please keep me posted?

Is your cat fixed? She could have been calling to go out because she was in heat and wanted to breed. If she was in heat she will come home once she is pregnant. Keep looking for her and hope for the best.

Loving my beautiful baby girl
I'm so sorry. When she does return or when you feel ready to adopt a new kitty, you may want to consider keeping her inside. I would also recommend that she wear a collar with her name tag including your address and telephone number. Another idea is microchipping. Please do keep us updated.
