My husband and I are looking into adopting a kitten to add to our family. We are already in contact with a seems to be reputable Napoleon breeder. She has two female cats that are about to deliver anyday. One of the litters is a F1 litter. I believe I now understand what a F1 litter is but are there any benefits or down sides? I guess I'm just a nervous new mummy. Thanks!! April

Sharky...it does look like the Nepoleon is a hybrid:

Basically, the Napoleon Cat is a hybrid (a breed developed from a deliberate cross between two existing breeds) with its "parent" breeds being members of the Persian Group (Persians, Himalayans or Exotics) and the Munchkin Group (either long or short-haired Munchkins).

The F or Foundation terminology is used throughout genetics to term an animal that is crossed out to another breed or wild population. It has gotten popularity and some understanding in the cat world in the wild hybrids but in general the F1 term is loosley a purebred with an outcross of any kind. In fish F1 can be used for lets say a tank-bred Mollie that is crossed with a wild-caught Mollie, just brings in new genetics to heavily inbreed species.

In bengals, F1 can be used to term a cross with the Asian Leopard Cat but it could also be used if you crossed the cat with an American Shorthair. Its just that one parent is not a bengal.

I just do not get it. Went to the website on Napoleon cats. WHY are people deliberately creating a new breed of cat? You have thousands of cats born every day that are looking for homes and not finding any.

What possesses people to cross breeds and create a new one? Why not just concentrate on the current breeds and make them better. IMO the Napoleon is nothing more then another mixed breed cat. Someone decided that it would be cute to cross a persian and a munchkin to have a "short legged persian/exotic" - despite they claim that was not the intention....if that's the case then explain WHAT was the intention? The cat may not have the extreme face of a persian, more of a "doll-face" persian, but still.....

Can someone explain what is beneficial in a Napoleon? Is this another "money making" scheme, or is it beneficial to both breeds?

I can honestly say that I'd never heard of Napoleon cats before today. The breed description sounds like they're striving for....a dollfaced persian.

"The Napoleon has features from each of its parent groups of course, but must be neither a "short legged" Persian nor a "bushy" Munchkin, there must be qualities that differentiate it from either of its parent groups. For example, the Napoleon cannot possess either the abruptly short nose of the Persian (not even a slight break between the eyes or above the nose is allowed) nor the wedge-shaped head or walnut shaped eyes of the Munchkin."

Odd that they wouldn't just breed dollfaced persians or non-extreme exotics, but good luck.
