OK, is it just me, or do these people come off as stupid for giving up Athena?

At the HS today, we got in a surrender. Athena is an 11 week old puppy that was purchased from a reputable breeder. She was purchased 4 weeks ago. Athena is an American Bulldog. Anybody else thinking CA-CHING?? She must've cost big bucks! To top that off, she is brindle & white. Brindles cost more. The reason for surrender? She was too active for them. I sat with her for an hour. I absolutely loved her. She loves to play. She has big clumsy puppy feet(which only make her cuter!). She is a lap dog. Athena kept trying to jump into my lap, but she's too little yet to make it. I would pat my lap & she'd try to jump up. I got to where I would catch her when she jumped so she didn't fall. She walks pretty good on a harness & leash(she'd never been on a leash/harness/collar). She is mosly housetrained already. She is the eager to please type. I told her to sit & got nothing. So I pushed down on her butt & told her to sit. Then she got a treat. I told her to sit again & she did all by herself. I stopped back out 3 hours later & told her to sit. She did. She's obviously a brilliant dog. She's cute, purebred(papered), BUT she is very puppy yet. She kept biting my fingers.

We had one app. in for her today. They refused to spay her. A good dog like that should be bred.
Umm....that defeats the purpose of a Humane Society! They are on the list of people that we will never adopt to.

Is it just me, or are the people who surrendered Athena missing out on the greatest thing ever?!? I am in love with her & if I could, I would bring her home.
Of course, if I had my way, there wouldn't be any room fo rus in the house around the cats & dogs!
I know she will find a good home. Her adoption fee is only $150(normal fee is $50), but since she is so young & PB, we can be picky. She will only go to the perfect home.

Just wanted to share. Let me say this about Athena: thinking about her makes me smile. She was so sweet & cute....I know she will steal someones heart & get to be spoiled rotten....I only wish it could be me spoiling her.

Oh my! I would love to have a 'lil pup like that! I bet she is just darling! And thats just ridiculous to give her up because shes active? Well d'oh shes a frickin puppy!! I mean they could of just dumped her somewhere I guess. at least they were smart enough to bring her there. Do you guys have any sort of drop off fee? Just curious....I know our local HS has some sort of fee if you dont live in the county. Anyhoo~I hope that 'lil girl steals someones heart soon, and she can get a loving home, forever!!

The saddest part is she is the 15th puppy that has been surrendered since April 1(its now April 9) for being "too active". All have been re-homed except her.

There isn't a fee for surrendering. We cannot take surrenders from outside the county. Most times we are too full. All strays are brought to the HS for 5 days until they turnover to property of the HS, then we can re-home them(we are a HS & the pound). When there was a surrender fee, people would just dump thier pets in the country, or worse yet, leave them in cages outside the HS. Many a cat & dog died in a cage outside the HS in the hot summer sun.

Athena is a mess right now as she has tiny bowels & cannot hold it from 8pm at night until 8am the next morning. There was poop all over her crate(it's a crate for 100 lb. dogs). She is the only dog in the room, so she gets lonely. Chloe the cat is in there & she doesn't think she likes Athena.

Athena's potentail adopters are going to be informed they were denied on Monday or Tuesday. They are moving in with a friend(who adopted a purebred Pit Bull from us with the worst case of mange-now healed) for a month, then they are moving into a house. They don't know where they are going to move into yet....they haven't bought a place yet. So, there will be the Pit Bull, Athena, & a Great Dane in a 2 bedroom apt??? Ummmm...No. Athena can find a better home than that. And what's to guarantee they will find a house they want? Will they be able to afford it? The guy currently isn't working...the wife supports them. How can you make a downpayment on a house when you have only been working for a month? There were just too many questions. He had experience with Am. Bulldogs, but he didn't have the stable life Athena deserves.

Oh, if I only had the money and was closer, this would be amazing! My bf has wanted a bulldog since he was like 3 years old. Athena sounds like a wonderful little girl, and she is so lucky to have people like you looking out for her well-being! If there is any ways, post pics of this little baby for us!

That drives me crazy! Obviously a puppy is going to be active! If they didn't want an active dog they shouldn't have gotten an am. bully, hasn't every one seen homeward bound? They are a very active breed. It bothers me when people get an animal for a myth, or it became popular in a movie instead of researching breeds apropriate for their life style.

I would love to have her! I love her name too.

If she came from a reputable breeder, they have the first right of refusal and the puppy should have gone back to the breeder (this is in any good breeders contract)

Though if she came from a BYB, its understandable why she ended up with you!
GRRRRRR
as often BYB breeders will not take their pups back..

SHe sounds like a love!!! I wish I could take her.

i thought of that also. If she came from a good breeder, I would expect the breeder would want her back. I thought it was standard for breeders to want their animals back if the owner couldn't/wouldn't take care of them anymore.
She does sound like a sweetie.

I didn't get to the HS last night, but I notice Athena isn't listed online, so I am assuming she got adopted. I have pics of her(not very good), so I will post them when I get them into my photobucket. I don't know what kind of breeder she came from, I was told he/she was a good one. How good, I don't know. Living where I do, most people think a "good" breeder is good because the puppies are healthy & lived in a clean environement, my idea of a "good" breeder is very different from that.

Too active?
People who just get a dog and expect it to be happy sitting out the back sleeping all day (especially a puppy) make me want to scream.

Get a goldfish, people.

Arghhh....I agree. This does not sound like the true definition of a "good" breeder.

Ok, so finally here is Athena.

It's not a very good picture because she was in her "cell". That and, for some odd reason, she wouldn't sit still!

Here's a second picture showing her cute face!

The breeder didn't dump the dog off, the owner did, you can't assume that the owner even told the breeder. The people could have boughten the dog out of state, or the breeder could have moved or the owners were just to lazy to contact the breeder. Just because the breeder makes some one sign a contract stating their puppies come back if the owner can no longer keep it doesn't mean the owner will accually contact the breeder, I would not have any way of knowing if some one with one of my kittens decides they no longer want it and take it to the shelter, dumps it off, or finds another home, unless they contact me. I make sure they understand I will take my kittens (or cats) at any time, but I can't make them tell me if they do decide to get "rid" of it. I know people want some one to place blame on for all the unwanted pets out there but it isn't always the "breeders fault" it's the owners.

Sorry. Athena did get adopted. Of course, on the Tuesday I was gone.
She went to a home that has experience with Pit Bulls, Am bulldogs, english bulldogs, etc. From what I hear, she is an absolute terror & they love her. They have an adult Pit that they also adopted that is teacher her the ropes. They e-mailed us a while ago with pictures & a title on one of them sleeping head to butt saying "those vicious pits!".
