I was just reading an article about Judith Levine, author of "Not buying it: My Year without Shopping"

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/074...lance&n=283155

She stopped buying anything that was not a necessity for a year. This even includes Q-Tips!

She managed to pay of $8,000 of credit card bills and lost weight. She did allow herself Internet access and newspapers. She could not go out to eat, get coffee, go to the movies, etc.

I couldn't do it!!!! No way, no how!

I could do it for a while (and probably need to also)

I could easily fill my day with work, Tara, playing with the dog and working out, but it'd be hard to do it for that long without spending some dough.

I think I could do it, I'd have to allow myself cable though, that would be my only indulgence, and I'd have to go to the grocery store and cook rather than grab something on the run- that would be that hard part

According to my husband... the zoo
Absolutley couldn't do it.

Although, I have been watching Oprah's Debt Diet and they have lots of good ideas. My husband I have recently agreed to cut our eating out for lunches down to once a week.

I am looking for ways to get extra money out of our budget, but I wouldn't be able to cut out ALL shopping, and there is NO WAY my husband could go without Q tips!

is it against the rules if you stock up on Q-tips (and other stuff) before you start??

Probably is against the rules to stock up. I never woudl be able to go without Q-tips for a year. I am a Q-tip-aholic!
Apparently the things she missed were ice cream, fresh mascara, fresh flowers and movies.

Lunches and and coffee out really do add up. Sometimes my husband and I will go out to eat or get takeout and I am horrified by how much it costs.

I may have to read this book....

I'm surprised that my husband hasn't bought me that book!!
But when I drove yesterday and today I had packed sandwiches from home so I wouldn't have to spend $$ on fast food!!!(more to spend shopping)

No Shopping?

Nah...unless I REALLY REALLY Had to and lived in the country where it would take effort for me to drive to someplace to go shopping, I know I would break down after a couple of days.

Wow, good for her. She's debt free, got savings, and now is making money from this book!
I couldn't do it, I find "Buy Nothing" day hard enough!

I know I can't. DH just lost his job, and I can't quit shopping! And I grabbed fast food for dinner tonight, because there wasn't time to fix dinner...with the running involved for school functions. But if I planned ahead better, and kept quick stuff on hand...

I would not give up q-tips, though...but I could use a lot less of them! I should really get that book! How did she handle gift giving occasions? Or at work we always go out for people's birthday lunch, and pay for the birthday person's meal! I would still want to do that, so there is exception #1. I think if I did this, it would have to be limiting myself to wasting $100 per month, instead of what I spend now. Then all the gifts, etc would come out of that money, so I would be less inclined to drop $20 at Taco Bell instead of coming home for a quick sandwich!

Interesting...I just read in one of the reviews that she gave up Q-Tips, but not $55 haircuts! Gosh, I only spent $15 on my last haircut! LOL!
