I think this would go in the behaivor forum... hehe

I've been using one of those gel-like hairball remedies on Oliver once a week for maybe 3 months now.... when I first brought it home, he'd run over to lick the weekly treatment right off my finger (it's chicken flavored)... well the last 2 or 3 weeks not only will he not lick it right off my fingers, but he downright refuses it! To the point where he'll run away to another room! Anyone have any reasons why he might change his reaction like that?! I havent changed brands or even tubes! I havent changed the way or day I offer it either... so the last few times, I've had to kind of smear it on his upper lip or teeth/gums so he licks it up, which has turned it into a stressful situation for him.... any suggestions?! Thanks!

I smear Lucky's gel on her front paw (get it on their really well or they shake it onto the walls and ceiling!). When i first got it Lucky loved to eat it, now she refuses. Occasionally if she sees Rambo enjoying it she will start eating it again. Go figure...i have no answers!

This has happened to me recently with Pudge(after a year and some change of weekly hairball meds). I've stored it in too warm a spot and the mixture separated in the tube. I've had to stir it together so that she will eat it.

I tried that type of thing to help with his shedding and he'd rather go hungry than eat his kibble when it has something on/in it... and forget offerring him wet food!! No matter what the brand or flavor, he'll sniff for maybe a micro-second and then turn up his nose and prance away.... geeze, you'd think he'd greatfully eat anything after being taken off the streets, but I guess he's too used to the inside life and me spoiling him now, haha

I noticed that happening once with my tube and so I threw out what I had dispensed and shook up the tube so it was back to normal... now I store it so that doesnt happen... I guess for now he'll continue getting it smeared on his lips or paw....

I stir mine into the girls wet food. But I've been down the same road as you.
. When I first tried to give Maggie May her hairball remedy I put it on her front paw. She refused to eat it! So along come sister Jazz a Boo (who will eat just about anything) and licked it of of Maggies paw for her!

Next time I put on Maggie May's nose, she just sat there with it on her nose and here comes Jazz again and licked it right off her nose!

Haha, hilarious!!! Oliver's an only-cat, so if he doesnt lick it off I'm sure it'll end up all over my bedding!!

And it's funny you have a kitty named Maggie May... One of my hermit crabs (yeah, weird, I know... but they're adorable and I love them) is Maggie Mae!

Don't mix hairball remedy into food ... that's just wasting it and making it ineffective. It's supposed to be given on an empty stomach. That's the only way it will work properly.

My cats used to like the stuff, too. Now only Rocket does. For the other two, I just open the mouth and stick a glob on the tongue. Can be kinda messy, so I do it in the bathroom in case some gets on the floor it's easy to clean up.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR THIS IDEA!!! Oliver was supposed to have his hairball meds yesterday but I was so busy and forgot, so he got it today.... so I smeared it onto his front paw (he looked at me like I had nine heads!
) and after a few seconds of running across the room on three legs, he sat and started licking! He did get one tiny spot of it onto the dining room wall with a paw shake, but that was it!! This was sooooo much easier than trying to force it down his throat and he licked his paw so clean it wasnt even sticky (although I whipred it quick with a warm wet paper towel to be sure).... thanks again!
