This is a scary recent new finding about cancer in cats:

http://www.vetpathology.org/cgi/content/full/41/3/209

A recent study used a case control design to evaluate how environmental factors may be associated with the development of feline oral SCC. The results of this study demonstrated an association between the development of feline oral SCC and flea collar use, dietary tuna intake, and high canned food intake. Any household ETS was associated with a marginally significant twofold increase in risk, with the suggestion of an even greater increase in risk in cats exposed for 5 years or longer and those living with two or more smokers. Although this study showed some interesting associations, implication of any of these substances in the etiology of oral SCC would be stronger if a biologic link could be established.

I went to the original article and found this:

Compared to cats eating mostly dry food, those with high canned food intake had a 3-fold increase in risk (RR = 3.6; P = .014)
I wonder whether the problem with canned food and canned tuna is a result of the can rather than the contents of the can?

At my more advanced age (than some of you young folk), I have come to the conclusion that we should take these case studies with a grain of salt.

Over the years I've heard some pretty good ones - bacon causes cancer, HRT causes cancer, a glass of red wine a day is good for your heart (now being disputed with another "study").

If we believed all of these so-called studies, we would lock ourselves up in a vacuum and stay there for our whole life.

I've also found that as "humans", we may hear 2 or 3 different versions of something and we are going to be adamant about and believe the one we personally like the best whether it's the right version or not.
