Hello

Today my vet gave me few de wormer pills that he reccomend I give the stray cat anyways i guess this cat is not use to getting pills because I struggled with him to get them inside his mouth it was a hard process and i got scratched up pretty bad! He also started foaming and drooling at the mouth because the pill would go in then come back out and it would get all wet and soggy well i FINALLY GOt the pill in him and he did not spit it back out so I guess that means he swallowed it? BUt he just had so much drool hanging from his mouth looked like he was rabid lol is that normal??

PS i cant get sick from getting scratched can i?

You might want to consider switching to a more pleasant tasting anti-worm med, a banana flavored liquid called Strongid T, given once a week for a few weeks. The only thing you can really get from scratches is cat scratch fever - highly unlikely.

You could try wrapping a towel around him next time to keep his claws from your skin!

I would watch those scratches carefully for signs of infection. If you got bit then please get that cat bite treated 89% of all cat bites become infected. The foaming is from the taste of the wormer which is a mild poison and the stress that the cat is under when you worm him. Thanks for caring.

my vet told me this is the only wormer that i should use on a stray cat as its some sort of special wormer that gets rid of every type of worm?? NOt sure why but he said its the best way to go if the cat was eating rats etc... No other options

The broad spectrum dewormer (Drontal) is definitely the best way to go since it really does take care of everything, from everyday roundworms and tapeworms to the more off-the-wall (and potentially very debilitating) types like whipworms.

For future doses, you can crush the pill and mix it in with tasty canned food (Fancy Feast is great for this), tuna, or plain meat baby food (read the label to make sure it is onion free - Beech Nut and Gerber plain meat foods are fine). She shouldn't even notice it this way.

Sometimes vets don't think in terms of what is realistically possible. Even if it's a little better for the pill to be given whole, it's better for the cat to get the pill and for you and her to both be safe. Crushing a pill in a treat, or opening a capsule and sprinkling the contents into a treat, often is the most realistic way to go.

Lots of vets are also much more familiar with dogs, and don't really understand that while a dog will fall for a whole pill hidden in a treat, most cats aren't that gullible! You have to do a much better job of disguising a cat's meds.

Yes, it is. I got totally freaked out when Lilly was a few months old & she started doing that when I had to medicate her. I called the vet in a panic, and was told that lots of cats foam; it's a normal reaction when they don't like the medicine. Different cats might foam in reaction to different meds. After the first time, I wrapped her in a towel & gave her the meds in the bathroom with the door closed so she couldn't spew foam all over the place!
