I hope she does kick in to mother mode. I wish you the best and mom. Prayers are with you. You seem like a super strong person.

I put them on her fur so that they will continue to smell like her not me, but she just ignores that. If I put it on the ground close to her she will growl at it.

This is what I am going to do.

Keep taking care of them, locking her in the bathroom and trying to get her to take care of them for two days. Then if after two days she doesn't take to them I am going to try to get the other cat to take them. If this happens then I will have to make sure and monitor all of the weights and probably do some supplemental feeding, but supplemental feeding is better than the full time care of 4 kittens. Like I have said before I have done this with 3 1 day old kittens, and they all grew up to be happy and healthy, but I have no desire to do this if any other options exist.

Any suggestions on getting Tullah to take care of her babies would be greatly appreciated

And a note to anyone who has not spayed their female cat:
THIS HAS BEEN QUITE AN ORDEAL!!!!!! SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR CATS! I am happy that I have 4 healthy kittens but we have spent over $500 and I am going to be up all night long! Trust me $60 is a lot more easy to come by for a spay than $500 + for the cost of hand rearing kittens and a C-section!
Sounds like a good plan, good luck to you! Also, I wholeheartedly agree with the bolded part...couldn't be said enough. I almost wish these forums, especially the healthcare one and this one, were required reading for all cat owners.

Hope things improve and Tullah becomes more interested in the babies!

Congratulations!!!! I was wondering how Tullah & Babies were doing. It may take her a while to warm up to those little Furries. Good Luck!

So a tad bit of improvement! I was able to get Tullah to lay on her side and I put the kittens up to her. She growled a lot so I kept petting her and telling her it was ok. She is not grooming them or anything but she is letting them all lay against hre so this is better. I don' tthink I can leave them to long becasue she is not helping with warmth much, moth of them are just hanging out...But I want to keep them thre as long as I can so she gets used to them and used to them rooting.
So far I have taken care of them. I have cleaned them and they have all had bowel movements. They are finally turning into fluffy kittens.

Hopefully things will continue to get better

Oh and I wrapped the rice heater in foil, I really think this helps keep in the heat....it is wrapped in a cloth so they aren't able to touch the foil.

A few years ago in walmart I bought this heating pad/ice pack thing. It would be perfect for this, and safe enough that it wouldn't burn any of the babies.

I don't remember what it was called, but it was a pillow that was filled with something that made it feel something like a beanbag. You could cover the pillow with a towel or something.

Anyway, if you wanted a cold pack you would freeze it.

But if you wanted a heating pad you would stick it in the microwave for 5 minutes. It lasted for hours.

I still use and love that thing.

I read somewhere you could make something siimilar by sewing up large pearl tapioca into fabric. I don't know if that works or not.

But if you asked the pharmacist about a microwave heating pad, maybe you could find something similar. And it's nice and soft for the little guys.

I want the little classic red

If they all have white on them, you can tell which is which by their markings. And also you'll have different shades of red too.

First rex litter I had 3 solid red boys - one classic, one mackeral, and one that was almost a solid red. Easy to tell apart

Well last night went better than expected. I layed Tullah in the box with the kittens and after calming her down she stayed for about an hour. When my fiance got home at three I had to put her back in the box but after that she stayed the whole rest of the night. She is letting them nurse and has started to get a bit aggitated if I take on away and let him cry (great sign) but she still won't bathe them or make them go to the bathroom.

Oh and another thing. She will only lay with them if I am in the room. When I left the bedroom this morning she left the babies and cried at the bedroom door for me to let her out. (Yes, she has a litterbox, food and water in the bedroom so she doesn't NEED to leave)

She is stuck to you
You might have to carry them all including momma in a kangaroo puch. j/k but she sounds like she really does trust you and wants you with her 24/7. Maybe a dog crate would be better. She would have to stay in it and nurse and you can move it to the different rooms you are in. Just a thought.

I wonder if that is because she doesn't know where they came from because they showed up, sort of, when she was 'sleeping'? Just interesting.

But, it does sound like big improvement over yesterda...hopefully, each day she will become more and more maternal with the kittens. Poor thing, she is probably totally confused.

you could always try that, Im sure people dont recommend it..But that was my problem with Squiggles, she was so attached to me..that she kept coming out of the bedroom to the living room, where we were..
i thought the bedroom would be perfect because I could shut the door, no noise, no kids, etc..
But eventually I was taking them to whatever room I was in. Then ended up just leaving them in the living room, and they been ok ever since

Lots of great ideas here. I agree with Wendy that maybe she doesn't know they're hers. And she is really attached to you. Are kittens to young to do the "vanilla trick" with? (you put vanilla extract on the mother - not sure where - someone will have to chime in with that one - and the babies, so they smell "like her."

Also, having had a c-section - I'm not a cat - but I'll bet she's in some pain and doesn't want to have them too much "down there".

She has finally become a pretty good mother. She still wants to get out and run out of the bedroom if I leave the door open, but if she is forced in the room she stays with them and is pretty good to them.

That's wonderful news! I'm glad she is doing better with them. Have you been able to weigh them at all? It's a really good idea to do so while she still isn't staying with them a lot, once they start to loose weight, they tend to go down hill really quick.

Weighing them is definatly a good idea. I had loaned out my scale to one of my patients when she was raising a kitten, she brought it back to the office so when I go in on Monday I will pick it up.

Wasn't sure if you would need it...but below is a link to low cost spay/neuter clinics in case you need one for when the time is right to have mom spayed or to give to the adoptors of the kittens:
