I took Tullah in for a C-section today. She had 4 little girls! 3 are orange like their dad and one is a calico. Tullah still won't acknowledge them but she is still really drugged. She tried to walk and she looks like she is drunk so I tucked her in a wicker box thing with some towels and laid her down. She will let them nurse if the try but won't help them by getting in a good position so it is hard for them to find a nipple. I supplemented them all with some formula and they are all tucked in with her seemingly pretty happy. She hasn't cleaned any of them yet so they aren't really pretty yet, but I figure after the drugs wear off and she has settled down a little from the car ride that her instincts will kick in.

I will post some pictures later on tonight after everyone has calmed down a little.

No the vet said that she could go home today. I thought she would have to stay till tommorow too.

Here are some pics of the babies!

As of now the orange ones are pretty hard to tell apart.

As far as recognizing the orange ones, I have heard lots of people use either non-toxic permanent markers or food coloring to mark them (pads of feet and under the arms)

That way, you have an idea who is who...

I am thrilled for you!

Oh and I wanted to ask, did the doctor comment on their being late and/or why she didn't deliver naturally? Also, are they big babies, weight wise?

I can take over for a while but would it be bad to take them to the other cat?

I think she may totally abandon them if she smells another cat on them. I would try everything else first. have you called the vet, if they have an emergency #?

The vet will just tell me the drugs haven't worn off. Which they haven't.

LOL...true. Keep trying to keep them warm, give them a feeding if they need one and keep Tullah confined with them...she will eventually get it.

I think adding another mother cat to the mix will just confuse her AND the other mother.

Make up some rice heaters or hot water bottle heaters for the babies (see below) while Tullah is wondering around in her drug-induced state ... bottle them with some warm formula about every hour and a half to 2 hours, make sure to potty them about 10 minutes after they eat.

Rice and Hot Water Bottle Heaters

To keep kittens warm if Momma is away from the nest, fill a clean sock with uncooked white rice or white beans until the sock feels firm. Tie a secure knot in the open end and place the sock in the microwave for 60 seconds. Test the temperature before you put the sock heater in with the kittens. Make sure the sock is not too hot.

You can also use a hot water bottle or soda bottle, filled with very hot water and wrapped in a thin hand or dish towel. Place this in the box next to the kittens. Make sure the soda bottle does not roll on top of your kitten by placing a small object underneath the blanket to prevent it from rolling and potentially harming the kittens.

If you are using these alternative heating methods, you will need to re-warm the sock or refill the bottle with hot water at least every two to three hours. Use another towel or blanket to drape over the top of the box to keep the warmth inside as you reheat the socks or bottles.

Well Tullah is still being a bad mother. It seems like the drugs have almost completely worn off. She has no trouble walking and if I open the bathroom door she is there enough to try to get out. She is locked in the bathroom with the babies. I have been feeding them and keeping them warm and trying to get her near them. I put them on her fur so that they will continue to smell like her not me, but she just ignores that. If I put it on the ground close to her she will growl at it.

This is what I am going to do.

Keep taking care of them, locking her in the bathroom and trying to get her to take care of them for two days. Then if after two days she doesn't take to them I am going to try to get the other cat to take them. If this happens then I will have to make sure and monitor all of the weights and probably do some supplemental feeding, but supplemental feeding is better than the full time care of 4 kittens. Like I have said before I have done this with 3 1 day old kittens, and they all grew up to be happy and healthy, but I have no desire to do this if any other options exist.

Any suggestions on getting Tullah to take care of her babies would be greatly appreciated

And a note to anyone who has not spayed their female cat:
THIS HAS BEEN QUITE AN ORDEAL!!!!!! SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR CATS! I am happy that I have 4 healthy kittens but we have spent over $500 and I am going to be up all night long! Trust me $60 is a lot more easy to come by for a spay than $500 + for the cost of hand rearing kittens and a C-section!
