My cats have 2 bowls which are emptied and refilled with filtered water daily. they are pretty good about drinking water throughout the day, but they also like drinking rain water that's collected in plant pots (ICK), or water after our showers.

Any other cats do this? Why would they go for the icky water when they have fresh available?

I wish I knew the answer.

I keep a fresh bowl of water down at all times (changed usually twice a day), and I also keep the kitchen faucet dripping as two of our cats prefer that.
My oldest cat, however, would rather drink the water from the dirty dishes soaking in the sink.
Luckily I do not put in soap when I soak them.

My kitties are always trying to pull strainers from the kitchen sink and bathtub so they can reach their paws in the drain to try to get water from there. Yech!

It is normal. Maybe they like the taste. My cats love rain water wherever it collects into a puddle. Maybe our "fresh" water with all its filtered, purifying agents is not that fresh for our cats.

My cat loves condensation off of cold cans or bottles, and drinks the leftovers from a shower too. Sometimes I catch her playing in the toilet, but usually she's playing with wet tp (if someone blows their nose or something-gross!!!). She licks the nasty drain in the tub too
. I don't know what it is. Maybe it tastes better.
I've actually found that she likes tap water better than filtered, so usually I don't use the filter on the spigot.

My skittles has to have shower water or sink water that is straight from the tap. It has a drip and she knows it an laps it up.

Two of mine also drink form taps and they all run tot he pond inthe gardden or to a puddle when I let them out, ifnoring their nice fresh bowls! But I know they don't like hte taste of chlorine in the tap water, which the filter doesn't wholly remove. They prefer bottled water.

My 2 have a permanent supply of cllean water. (Water bowls changed 3 times daily) but when they go into the garden, they'll drink from rain puddles and other dirty water.

I think its the hunter in them that makes "found" water more enjoyable than the water we put out for them. I have started hiding bits of dry food in different places so she has to hunt for her food rather than just go to the dish and eat. I think that little extra challenge is good. in the morning she has always found the bits and eaten them. it's an additional thing to do when she has to be confined in the guest suite ( our house has motion detector alarms and she would trigger them in the night. )

we have had her since november and other than shredded paper she hasn't damaged or broken anything because i assume we keep her busy enough with other things. either that or she is perfect
- which i'd like to believe but doubt.

Skittles has a huge bowl of fresh water daily. You will never see her drink from it. No clue why. but I give in to her needs she is my baby.
