Have you ever heard a 1 day old kitten hiss at you? One of mine has hissed about 4 times now. What makes them do that? I thought the mother taught them to hiss later. Are they born with the instinct to hiss? Is he hissing because he is scared?

Yes, I had a litter of Orientals and one of them (a big one) spat from almost the moment he was born. It was really funny.
It is total instinct...do not take it personally

New kitten hiss is soooooo sweet!! They try to look so furious.
This has reminded me about when I first got Magnum every time Max (my dog ) disturbed him he spat at him there is nothing as funny as a 10 week old kitten trying to spit.He sounded like he was coughing.Now they suggle up with each other.
LOL, my kittens did that sometimes too. It's so funny to see, they think they are so ferocious!
