Hi all,
Well took pippy to the vets today. they where great. didnt quite have the money but they said it could wait till the end of the week.
So she checked her over and said that she has congestion on the lungs(a chesst infection) to gave her an injection to last two days and pills to start on wednesday.
Other than that she is a bit skinny, but thats due to having been ditched(how cud someone do that, she the most affectionate kitten EVER). She said that the baldnes wasn't due to any skin condition but down to stress of what happened to her. they don't know if she cud be pregnant cos it cud be to early to tell but the girl who found her said that they found erm things that came out of her so she cud of been prenant(maybe thats why she was dumped)
Other than that she's in prefect health just need to get the weight up.
So i have 2 questions. 1) how do u give pills to a cat. Can u put it in food. If she eats around it and do u to is manually and 2)they vert said to not give her canned for and to stick with dry food only. I found this a bit strange as we where giving her a mixture of both. any thoughts on this wud be helpful.
Thanks for the advice.

Great to hear that Pippy checked out OK.

It would have been good if the vet had shown you how to give the cat a pill. You can try putting it in the food but it's unlikely she'll actually eat it.

She is better off eating wet food than dry. Vets often don't know much about food and nutrition so don't be too concerned about what she said. If Pippi likes wet food, continue giving her the wet food and you could give her about 1/3 cup per day of dry food to snack on between meals. If you are trying to get her to gain weight, you could also feed her kitten food which has more calories.

How our vet taught us to pill the cat:
(If you do a search on here, you will find mass quantities of other ways)
I picked her up and held her like a baby, then put my hand around her head from the back, put my middle finger and thumb in the corners of her mouth, and forced her mouth open. It's not a violent thing, it's more of a reflex. You're not trying to force her mouth open here, just pushing on it so she'll open it. Then my friend put the pill as far back in her throat as he could get it. As soon as you put the pill down on the back of her throat, you have to poke it down in one quick motion, kind of like if you were touching something hot. I was worried about choking her or something, but he said in 20 years of practice he's never heard of anyone having a problem. After the first couple times, it gets easier for everyone.

It's so great that she turned out okay! Yay! It's hard to believe why people dump any pet. They always seem to be the most beautiful loving creatures. Maybe it's cause they realize how much better you are than the @$@@^&%%#$# who dumped them.

I find its just easier to pill the cat than try with food. Of course she may not trust you very much yet if you haven't had her very long so that makes it harder. I get her a position where she can't back up (like between my legs) and get her mouth open and plop the pill as far back as possible. Cats swallow much larger pieces of food than we do (don't chew much) so its quite normal for them to want to swallow it. I might hold her mouth closed just a second so I know it goes down. You can also stroke their throat after puting the pill in as that prompts them to swallow. I find if I don't hold her mouth shut for a second then she might try to chew it which will almost certainly end up on the floor.

i've been told that if, after you release their jaw, they lick their noses, that means they've swallowed. not sure if it's true, but still... i know i can't stick out my tongue with stuff in my mouth! at least, not without losing the stuff!
