I posted a while back about my cat Bastet. Well, the kittens are all alive and well (knock on wood) but they're beginning to wander. Bast had the kittens under my bed which I would imagine isn't a very sanitary/safe place to begin with. I tried to move them quite a bit but nothing pleases Bast but where she gave birth to them. I clean up down there every so often but them being down there at all makes me nervous. I've tried EVERYTHING and EVERYWHERE when it comes to moving them but still, no luck. Should I just trust that mother knows best?

If you can get to them in a hurry (like if there was an emergency, I wouldn't worry about it too much. It sounds like she is happy keeping them there.

The only other alternative is to move them and totally block off under the bed, I used pieces of cardboard box taped to the boxspring all the way around the bed. I did this because our bed is too heavy to move and I knew if an emergency came up, I would have a very hard time getting to the kittens.

So, it is your call. If you feel it is safe, then I wouldn't worry about it.

Heh, the word "emergency" makes me nervous >.>;;. I moved the mattress off the bed on day one. That way I could get to them...though it also means I've been sleeping on the sofa for the past couple weeks

obviouse mom is doing a great job maybe you could leave them there for another week. If they are wondering they will be back just kitty proof the room

I wouldn't worry too much about it being sanitary (unless of course things are growing under there that science hasn't even discovered yet). Assuming that's not the case, don't worry about cleaning so much. Mom is licking their excrement and swallowing it...I doubt a little lysol will make a difference. lol

If she's safe and comfortable in there with them, let it be. The only thing is you might want to make some sort of barrier so the kittens can't get too far and get in trouble or hurt until they're about 3 or 4 weeks old.

Can you get a whold of a big wide box, flat enough to get under there and let mom in and out, but just high enough to keep the kittens in for a bit?

When my guys outgrew their box, I folded up a blanket in the corner of the room, and they stretched out there.

And take it as a complimeht, she wouldn't have kept them under your bed if she didn't love and trust you.

Shade....if you are concerned that there are hazards to your kittens then I would try to get them out...otherwise, it is probably ok to let to let them stay back there. Mom will bring them out (or they will come out on their own) when the time is right. When they are a little older....I would suggest however a different room (perhaps a bathroom) or even get a dog crate to keep the family in...otherwise, your sleep is going to be interrupted by a bunch of exploring kittens who do not know the first thing about "8 hours of sleep".

I have a question. Wont the mom also bring them back if she sees they are leaving her sight and are to young.

Yes...typically moms will bring their kittens back to the nest if they are venturing too far away and are too young.

My kittens were born 3/14/06 and are beginning to walk. I have them in a dog crate, though, and they can't get out. When we take them out to play, they start going every direction!

Even though Momma tries to keep the babies clean, there is some mess! And as they get older, and start litter training, they sometimes have a few misses. Just keep them shut in your bedroom, and plan to have the carpet cleaned if needed after they get adopted out! LOL!

Once the kittens really get moving well, they find a way to escape! I have a dog crate, and the opening is only a few inches off the floor...that is maintaining my kits for now. When they get older, I'll close the lower door, and leave the other one open. It is probably two feet off the floor. But the babies learn pretty quickly how to climb up the inside of the cage and wander! Just like teenage kids, they do their own thing sometimes!
