Help!! My 1 1/2 year old kitten has been litter box trained since she was very young. She has never had any accidents and has always been really good about using the litterbox. However, once in a while after she has pooped, some poop will stick to her bottom and she will wipe her bottom on the carpet to get it off. It is driving me crazy and I can't figure out how to help her. Is there any thing I can do??/ HELP!!!

That's funny because i've seen dogs do that too. But seriously my cats used to do it every once in a while but not anymore. Maybe they grow out of it.

Marlee does that every once in a while. I've noticed that it is usually becaues she has eaten one of my hairs (I have fairly long hair) and part of the hair is still stuck in her bottom causing the poop to be stuck. Does that make sense? I have to catch her (she runs cause she is freaked out) and get the poop with a paper towel then I trim the hair with some scissors or pull it out VERY slowly and carefully.

Of course that may or may not be why your kitty does it!

Z does that too. Very rarely if something gets stuck, she rubs across the bathmat in front of her box or else comes out in the living room and rubs on the carpet. I usually catch her and wipe it off and then clean up the carpet. I'm not sure if there is any way to stop her. Think how you'd feel with no toilet paper!

Hi Hidester81:
Sounds like she may have worms itching butt. Also, you may put her on dry cat food so that her stools will be firmer and she will feel cleaner after leaving the litter box. If she still does the butt rubbing then it is definitely worms. I would take her to the vet and let them determine what kind she has as their pills are better than over the counter I think.
Hope this is of some help.

I was going to mention internal parasites too. (if they haven't already been checked for worms, etc) That is a very common reason that animals will drag their butt on the carpetting.

Could be parasites, hair caught in the opening, constipation or anal gland problems. Best thing to do is go the vet-

The only thing I can say is,...I HATE WHEN THAT HAPPENS.

If it's only a once-in-a-while thing, I wouldn't worry too much. If it's happening often and on a regular basis, I would suggest seeing a vet.

If you want to avoid it, perhaps one of those throw rugs (or whatever they call them they put on high-traffic areas to protect the carpet) that you can put in the area she tends to do it just in case? Easier to clean that then the carpet.

HAHA i just saw my baby do that for the first time last night... is your cat medium or long haired?? Mine is and that's what happened, she had loose stool and it got stuck to her furry butt
... if so, i would try to trim that area as much as you can... i had to cut off the poops, so i think that trimmed down the hair a little in that area. but let me tell you when she did it i had to laugh
yeah i'm bad, lol. i have berber carpet and i didnt notice the poop on it but if i were you i would put another peice of carpet in front of the litterbox so it doesn't ruin yours. but yeah i would take it to the vet if it's all the time. Good luck!

My cat used to do this ALL the time and she'd leave skid marks on the carpet. Ick!! We took her to the vet and she tested negative for parasites, her anal glands were normal and fine, she wasn't constipated, and everything tested out normally. However, she does have very firm stools, so the new vet said she probably had developed the habit and that since her stools were firm (eventho she's on a stool softener) it may hurt just a tad when she pooped.

Make sure your kitty is drinking plenty of water. Also, you may want to give your kitty some canned pumpkin (not the pumpkin pie filling) once or twice a day. This has helped tremendously, though she still has to be on a stool softener as well. However, no more skid marks or pieces of poop on my carpet.

Lastly, use an enzymatic cleanser to clean the spot(s) on the carpet where she's been scooting or she'll continue doing it.

One of my cats does this sometimes too.
First, rule out parasites.
Second, are the cat's stools too hard or too soft?
My cat's are too hard and get stuck sometimes. Since we've been feeding him mostly wet, he's been much much better.
