Weird problem with male cat

Okay, I had to join up so I can try and find an answer for this weird "thing" my cat has. He's a young, unneutered male. I'm a woman btw (yes, it might matter in this problem). While I lay on the bed on the computer, particuarly if I'm not dressed, he likes to jump on onto the bed and get petted.

Well.... being an unaltered male that he is, he begins to hump in the air and he gets a loud, rough meow that I can only imagine means he's aroused. We have to throw him off the bed, and he'll begin licking himself. He can be such a problem that we shut him out of our room at night. Then he begins pawwing at the door until he gets sprayed with naughty water.

Any help? Am I crazy? We'd like to get the cat fixed soon, but right now we think it's a bit too expensive to combine with our other expenses.

Oh, and there is also another male cat in the house who's about a year old (older than the other cat). This male is fixed though.

Please don't throw him off the bed or spray him with water

The best thing is to get him neutered when you can asap because there could be some aggression with the other cat before long

What would you recommend I do when he does bad things then?

He's not getting hurt by us getting him off the bed (the top of the bed is maybe a foot off the ground). Nor is he getting hurt by us spraying him with a little bit of water.

As I said before, we cannot currently get him neutered. We found him wandering in the parking lot of our apartment complex as a kitten a few months ago and took him in after seeing him nearly get hit three or four times. We put up signs and no one came forward.

There are low-cost spay/neuter clinics all over the place. Zissou's spay only cost $45 all told, including overnight stay. Especially for a rescue stray, a lot of places will give you even more of a discount. Possibly even free.

That is really the only way to stop his behavior. He is stressed because he wants to mate, and can't. However I feel about the spray bottle, it definitely isn't going to help in this situation because his tomcat hormones are way stronger than any outside discipline. (Compare it to being in really bad pms all the time. That's how he feels, hormonally).

See... he's not just trying to mate though... he wants to mate with me.

He only starts humping and making that weird meow when he gets up next to me, the only woman in the house. The only female in the house.

I don't have the money right now to get him fixed because my car was recently stolen and I'm trying to put my car back together in order for it to even be drivable. It was not able to be covered by insurance for that (insurance was through a parent and it was cancelled without notice approx 1-2 weeks before theft).

I'd love to get him fixed now.. but I can't if it's going to cost $50.

So your the next best thing he's got to an actual queen.

The only thing that will stop it along with the meowing noises is when you can "eventually" get him neutered.

You still didn't give me any suggestion as to what to do when he's bad besides spray him with a bit of water or get him off the bed. Could you help me out here?

I've also looked into discounted neutering locally and cannot find anything. I'm in WA.

Well, there isn't any other way to stop him from trying to mate with you. I'd be surprised if he doesn't do the same thing to your other cat while you're not around.

It may have something to do with you being female, it may not. I guess you could try putting double-sided tape on your comforter or tin foil or something. Don't punish him every time he does this though because then he will just associate you with angry/scaredness.

Like I said, there are ways to get him neutered for even less than fifty dollars. If you told us where you lived, we could help you. You can try this site: http://www.lovethatcat.com/spayneuter.html , but there are many others too.

I think the reason someone suggested you not punish him like that is because he really isn't doing anything bad (like ripping up your best curtain). He's just acting like a male, unneutered cat, setting his territory most likely.

I don't know if you are aware, but if he hasn't started yet, soon he will start spraying. Whatever expense the neuter is, it won't be as much as trying to get the stench out of your walls, furniture, carpet, etc. Which, chances are, will never come out completely.

If you do a search for low cost spay and neuter, you will most likely come up with places that you can have it done for very little. Depending on where you live, you might even find a place that does it for free. It might be worth a search to find out. I know of someone in the ohio region that found a mobile spay unit that would actually come to her home, pick up the cat, neuter it and return it for free. You don't know what's available unless you look. In my area I've found places I could get my guy neutered for as little as $45 including shots. $30 without shots.

And honestly, I'm really not trying to be rude or sarcastic. Male spraying has a very strong scent that really is almost impossible to get rid of completely short of sanding, coating and repainting. Once they start, there is a chance they will continue even after they are spayed. If you catch them early enough, chances are they won't ever start.

And I understand because I'm on a fixed income. But there is some truth to the penny wise dollar foolish sayings. So please consider even researching it, because if you are in any situation similar to mine, replacing furniture would be even harder than this.

I hope you find a solution.

UNTIL you can afford to get him neutered; can you find a way to Play with him? My neutered male keeps trying to mate with his adopted brother and the ONLY way I can stop HIM is to put him on a harness and leash and let him outside in the back with me. Then I also take him for a walk.

ONCE he is tired THEN he stops trying to mount my other male or at least I can pet him and soothingly tell him to "cool your genes"!

Well, we certainly don't abuse him in case anyone did or does think that. He never even sees us near the "naughty water" until he's doing something bad anyway. Nor does he get put off the bed until he's doing something bad. We pet him, play with him, give him treats and toys. He's allowed to lay on the bed, sofa, and chairs and pretty much go anywhere in the house (except for countertops and presently the bathroom because I have my car's trunkliner on the floor, and the other cat has at times peed on things... but only when he's mad at my boyfriend or when things smell odd, such as wet towels in the laundry). He's treated well. He's even sleeping next to me on the bed right now.

As far as our location, we live in Olympia, WA. I'm new to the area so I don't know how far away all of those places are. Judging by MapQuest, it looks like Puyallup is the closest. (I looked for the places I've heard of... there's a lot of small towns here.) So it's 45 minutes away. We tried calling the "free" clinic today, but they're not open. Another place is open but doesn't answer calls on Saturday and tells you to just come in instead.

I agree that punishment of any form is inappropriate in this case. He isn't doing anything bad, he is just sexually mature with no outlet for his appetite.

I have heard that confining unspayed females (in heat) in a dark, cool room, can help calm them down. Maybe that would help with him when he is especially 'friendly'? I don't know. Maybe someone else has some experience with trying that?

But, I would not punish him. He is not being 'bad'. It will only serve to confuse him.

Just something you will have to deal with until he is neutered.

The only rooms we have to put him in right now are the bathroom (explained why that can't happen) and the bedroom, where most of our time is spent.

He will continued getting sparyed with water and put off the bed. Sorry if you guys don't agree, but no matter how you try to convince me, he will continue to get that.

We'll try to get ahold of some local clinics on Monday and then maybe next weekend (hope they're open on weekends since it's our only free time) we might be able to get him to one if it's affordable for us.

Ok, but you asked for advice. Your choice to do what you feel is right, we certainly cannot stop you.

Good luck with finding a low cost clinic. He will be nuch better after he is neutered.

I wanted advice on how to stop or discourage it, possibly even something I can use before we can manage to get him to a clinic. I just happend to say how I'm trying to discourage it for now because I thought it might stop people from suggesting the same again.

Yay for trying to get him neutered! I think you will all be much happier after thats done!
Nobody is accusing you of abusing your cat. Zissou also gets sprayed with a little bit of water if she is doing something bad that could also be dangerous to her, like chewing on electric cords and such. However, your cat doesn't understand what he's doing wrong, and so probably cannot be trained not to do it. I would probably also remove him from the bed if I was in your situation, and put him out of the room for a few minutes. It's just that the spraying him in this instance is probably futile.
The people who have given you advice have a lot of experience dealing with strays, and they can become very resentful and distrusting much more easily than other cats, and I think people are simply trying to help you avoid that situation.
Regardless, once you have him neutered, this behavior, as well as quite a few other undesirable habits, will stop!

Oh, I understand and I certainly do not think you are abusing him. I think people are just trying to tell you that punishment may make it worse, not better.

I agree that just pushing him away and removing him from the room is probably the best idea for now, until he can be neutered.

I've been wanting to get him neutered. We only figured out he wasn't fixed after my car was stolen though, after we started having to spend all our money to fix my car.

Actually, this cat is overly trustful if anything. When my boyfriend found him wandering the parking lot, the cat walked right up to him. No surprise on that though. He was walking in front of cars and almost got hit a few times.

The cat knows when he's being bad too. When he does something he knows he's not supposed to do, he'll either freeze or run away if we even so much as look at him (he HATES the water). He won't usually run or stare us down like that. Usually he's not doing anything bad.

It's is awesome that you took him in. There are far too many animals left out to fend for themselves. It is so sad and frustrating. (but that is a whole other topic, LOL)

Sorry to hear about your car. Been there, done that. We had ours stolen from our driveway and then returned the same night totalled. (4 local teens, between the ages of 12 and 14!!!!!) The real pan in the butt was that they were caught but only received a slap on the wrist for it. We were out hundreds of dollars (insurance deductable)

Grrrrr.
