Let me take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Paulena and I am from Western Kentucky. I have two little babies, one boy and one girl.
First of all I would like to tell you my story of how my little boy and girl came to me.
One day at the end of May, 2005, I had just returned home from a two week stay in the hospital. Hubby and I was setting here on the couch gazing out the back french doors (they lead to patio area). I thought I saw something moving around on the back steps and he got up to look and he said not A something, but 3 somethings. Low and behold it was 3 little kittens. Two black and 1 gray. I was so excited, I hadn't had kittens since I was a kid. I knew this was going to be a great challenge. We kind of figured out that they had been abandoned by their mom, now it was up to me to take over and become their new Mommie. Hubby kind of thought they were no older than 3 or 4 weeks old.
I began to feed them, milk only for awhile to see if I could lure them out from underneath the house. No way was they coming out from underneath the house until I went back in. They were very, very skiddish and I was a stranger to them and I knew it was gonna take awhile. They could be standing on the back steps wanting to eat and just as soon as I opened the door, they were gone, until I went back in the house.
One day, much to my surprise, my little Gray girl disappeared and never returned. She had came in heat and there was a Tom and a Adult Female hanging around, so we just figured that she might have killed her. We looked and looked and never found her little body anywhere. I was so upset.

I never gave up on the other two. I was very persistent, I could not wait to get my hands on them. But it took a long time, finally one at a time they started to approach me. Before long I could pick them up for a minute and then they would start struggling to get down. It has taken almost a year now and I have finally got them to coming in and eating their meals, and they will stay in for awhile and play with me now. But only me. They are still frightened of my husband and son (25). Just recently I have been trying to get them to stay in at night. (There are two strays hanging out that they are frightened of. Kind of figured it was momma and poppa.) Works for awhile then they want out. They are very good little kitties, they have never had an accident in the house at all. They will come to my bed at night and let me know that they want to go out. But it has been kind of trying at times because one will want out and the other will stay in. Then she will want out and he comes in. This goes on for quiet sometime during the night.
Hubby is getting alittle sick of it because he has to get up and go to work. (Any suggestions)
There is a big difference in their temperment, he is kind of laid back and nothing seems to bother him, and she is still very skiddish. Just walking across the floor scares her and she will run and hide underneath the chair. My husband cannot even touch her without luring her in with food, the minute the food is gone, so is she!!
My little boy's name is Blackie boy and the little girl is Katie. I think they are twins, they have the very same markings, solid black with a few little white hairs on their chest. Just real cute.
I have been reading the site for about a month now and have gotten some really good ideas and suggestions for all of you. I decided that I wanted to be a part of such a great group of cat lovers!!
Thank You for your patience and understanding. I hope to learn more and more about the behaviors of my little ones and any other tips and information that I can gain from your knowledge. Sorry, I was so long winded!!

Thanks Again,
Paulena

WELCOME!!!!

what a wonderful story. I am so sorry to hear about the grey one
dont we all wish we could save them all

Its great that you are looking over these 2 kitties, thankyou

your best place to start looking for answers to your questions is in the 'caring for strays' forum... so many of our members have so much experience with what your going through, how to get them to trust more and such. The biggest advise you will find though is lots of patience. But it sounds to me as if you have alot of that.
I hope in time they both learn to love being indoors so that they can always stay indoors away from the dangers outside, but I guess they are used to the big world by now so it will take some time. What happens if you ignore them when they want out? guess they get very vocal huh?

anyway, take a peak at the strays forum and post any questions in there and our more knowledgeable members will offer what advise they can.
Are they neutered/spayed? I think that would be the first thing you need to organise if you havent already.

welcome again - looking forward to getting to know you

Welcome!

It's so wonderful you have taken these kitties in. I took in a Mom and her babies, too and Mom was feral/stray. It just takes time and patience. Let them come to you/husband/son at their own pace. My female cat took a very long time to come around . She stayed on one chair for 6 mos- 1yr before finally making her way into the family room and joining us.

If I can help with any site questions, please feel free to send me a private message

Thanks for the wonderful welcomes, Yes, my little girl is spayed, I had her spayed back in December along with her shots. I had to ace her before I could put her in the box. I need to get my little boy fixed asap. There is a female that is hanging around and I think she may be preggers, but not sure. She sure looks like it. There sure was alot of commotion under the house about a week ago and Blackie Boy ended up getting hurt by another stray male. So that is next on my list.

I have been in the strays forums and it has offered me alot of information that has been very helpful, just by reading it.

What a nice story and I'm sorry about your little kitty. It sounds like you definately will fit in at this site because there are so many careing and helpful people here. I just joined a month ago and I have been addicted ever since. Can't wait to see some pics of your family.

Is the girl that you think is preggo a stray/feral?

Hey Paulena--sounds to me like you need a cat flap! It's easy enough to train a cat to use one; and it should be possible to install yourself if you're decently handy with tools (depending on your door, of course).
