Dont you just wish that you could take out the ovaries and menstrual cycle and only put it back in or turn it on when you want babies?

I wouldn't have a hysterectomy unless necessary. I did have a tubal ligation 6-1/2 years ago...that was real simple. And I LOVE not worrying about birth control anymore. But I was 37 years old and had just given birth to my 4th child. Still, my doctor kept saying, you know this is permanent, right? I just said, yes, and what is the downside?

They want to be very sure you are certain. If you are younger, have no kids, and especially if you are single, the doctor may have trouble believing you are ready to make the decision. Just keep working on them, and let them know you are certain (if you are!). If there is any question, you could always try the bc shot that lasts 3 months.

I have had abnormal pap smears, and think that eventually I may need a hysterectomy. If so, I won't be terrified of the surgery. But I sure won't be volunteering early!

Best of luck to you in this decision.

I told her she'd be better the next day and she said, "What do you know, you didn't have a hysterectomy!". I told her that I actually had had mine done the day before. She was astounded that I was up and around.

The doctors want you up and moving now - it helps in the healing process as long as you don't overdo it.

So, bottom line, it really depends on your threshhold of pain as to how painful it will be. IMO, it was no worse than my appendectomy. I did take the full 10 weeks off work though
- doctor's orders.
I had fiber? tumors on my uterus, so at age 30 I had a tumorectomy as the tumor had sluffed off and was gangrene. The doctor did not remove the other tumors so at age 31 ONE of them had grown to be the size of a 3 month old fetus.

I then had my uterus removed and my cervix too.

I had BEEN having periods that were so painful I felt as it I had a double bladed knife up inside of me.

Next day after my hysterectomy I was up dancing in my hospital room! NO MORE pain and NO MORE mess!

I had NONE Of the after effects mentioned! I was deleriously happy!

Every woman is going to have a different experience. Some, like MyBabies, Yosemite and me are going to breeze through it. Others are going to have complications. All of those above-listed complications are POSSIBLES- not guaranteed.

I will reiterate: removing a healthy uterus, strictly for purposes of contraception, is not a wise decision. It is also likely that your insurance carrier will not pay for it, as it would be elective surgery.

I had a hysterectomy when I was 29 years old. I did have to have 1 ovary removed also, because of precancerous tumor. I am 46 now, and from tests I have gone through a early menopause. I don't get hot flashes, I am more mellow(that could be age and wisdom), my sex drive is better!! because it really hurt me in my 20's to have sex, because of medical problems. I wouldn't have a hysterectomy if it wasn't a medical condition.

Wow, wow and wow!! I am so glad I caught this thread!!

Long story short, I had a cone biopsy done in February of this year and although my doctor was successful in removing all cancerous areas, I was recently informed that I am now high-risk and more likely than not, there is a high possiblity of cancerous tissue/cells returning.

The option would be to have a hysterectomy. I just started researching the hows, whys and whats of it all. I am only 43 but am very done in the child-bearing stages.

I so appreciate everyone being so open about their experiences. Feel better about my option already

Wow, I had a cone biopsy for abnormal precancerous changes about 11 years ago. They said it may develop into cancer, and I might need a hysterectomy in time. Since then I have had 2 kids, and mostly normal paps. If I get an abnormal, they recheck it, and it comes back normal.

Ask your doc what the time frame is on the recurrence of cancerous cells. If it is 10-15 years out, you could wait on the surgery, right? I doubt they would encourage it if it wasn't necessary...but at least ask if you can just be closely watched!

I will ask...just had my post-op 1-week ago and all is well. Have to go every 3 months now for a colposcopy YUK!! until further notice. From my understanding, if all is well then twice-a-year for paps.

A hysterectomy is not necessary for me at this stage in the game but it was mentioned to me by my doctor as an option if this reoccurs. I will cross that bridge when I get to it but if this does reoccur, I will definitely opt for a hysterectomy rather than cone biopsy after cone biopsy. Enough is enough.

Thanks so much for the input; really appreciate it.

I chose the hysterectomy, over the conization, at 32. As it turns out, I had a small fibroid and would have probably had to have the hyst, in the future. I, too was done with the baby business.

For those of you who are being "watched" for cervical cancer, you may want to have your doctor send paps to 2 different labs. It might cost $20.00 extra, but it could be well worth it.

I was going for paps every 6 months so that I could stay on the pill. When my cervical cancer was caught, it was a no-choice, no waiting, hysterectomy. Cervical cancer is one of the slowest growing, but wasn't caught early although I was having regular paps. Thank God it was caught at all!

What I found out is the poeple who read the pap smears are working under a lot of pressure because they have a quota to reach. Misreadings are caused by this. The chance of having an accurate reading is increased greatly by having the lab work done twice.

Wow, that's scary. I bet if we knew how many mistakes were made (in any profession) by people who are facing unreasonable deadlines and quotas—well, I think it'd be a pretty big number.

Sorry for the hijack. I now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.

Why not a tubal ligation instead? remove a major organ to avoid periods?
with your ovaries you are still at risk for ovarian cancer and after a hysterectomy orgasms will be a little different. some women report A LOT different, but decidedly different.

It certainly was not elective in my situation.

I don't think I would go that far at a young age, I think you need some of that stuff and what it does for you
I have heard some stories about women who had them young and didn't like the effects that got. I don't even know if they will do it if there aren't some real problems, I'm not even sure if they will cut and tie your tubes that young.

I've been reading this thread just because I find it interesting. I have nothing much to add either way, as I am only 20 and plan on having children in my future.

But as far as a hysterectomy being elective: In situations where it is medically needed, as in many cases mentioned previously I say it is not elective. But in the original poster's situation, yes it would be elective since the reason is personal, not medical (if I'm understanding correctly!)

Under a stack of blueberry waffles.
My reasons are that

A I want no children

B My periods are so random and irregular that I never know when they're going to come and how long they'll be (ie, skip a month, then bleed for a month, finish only to start again 4 days later, etc), and I do not want to be on regulatory chemicals for a few decades of my life, because I do not see that as healthy. I did not want to have to post that in such a public manner, hence the "personal".

I'm sorry if I offended you, I did not mean to at all! I was just answering the question about if it was an elective surgery, and I answered it the way I did b/c I figured that is how the insurance companies will look at it. Again, I'm so sorry if anything I said upset you, it wasn't meant to!
