Well yesterday we had a toxic spill on the roof of our building at work. Because I am preggers they sent me outside at 9:45 am (everyone else stayed in) - I read my book to 11 am and then went back in - it still reeked. I lasted about another hour. At that time people (not me) started passing out int he building from the fumes and getting very sick. I had developed a nasty headache and my asthma was really bad and I told my manager that I wasn't risking the baby and I was taking my lunch early. By the time I got my things together, the fire departmant was evacuating the building and our managers were saying "we don't have permission yet to leave from upper management". Screw that - the fire department is clearing the building - everyone started leaving. We had fire trucks, police and the bus ambulances outside the building. One of my co-workers who had been in the smell all morning collapsed. Shortly after they let us go home for the day as it was going to take a while to clear the smell and investigate what happened. This morning I arrived and couldn't get in right away because they were checking the air quality before we started work. Would have been nice if they did that yesterday before people started collapsing!

Oh well - I got an afternoon off work (I had a nap and went to the park with Kevin). My asthma is still not great today, but I am doing better. It was nice that the manager actually called me at home last night to see if I was ok - I was on of the few people the called to check on due to the pregnancy!

The cats house, we just pay the mortgage..
That was nice of him to call you! and you were dead right to stay away, you don't know what could have happened!
That awful that it was so bad people were passing out!
I love getting evacuated here, it's never anything serious but means time away from my desk!
Glad everybody is ok though.

I'm glad you are okay. I think its just poor mgmt not to let employees go home when conditions are not favorable to work. "no upper mgmt permission"-I remember that well!!! About a yr ago when I was working we had odd weather and lightening struck the transformers and the power went out for quite a large area-we were in the dark-we saw other businesses leave their employees go-no we had to sit in the dark take our lunch at 10:00 so we would be ready when the power came back on. (which it did 3 hrs later!!)
If you start feeling ill I wouldn't work today either !!!

Wow, thats scary!

How considerate of them to call to make sure that you were okay!

I bet you had a good afternoon off, especially getting to go to the park with Kevin!

I hope your asthma gets better!

I swear you work where I do!!!
we had a power outage and well in that instance you can't serve food, but would they let us leave?? Heck no, we sat in the dark trying to find out when the power would come back on finally we started to close down the store...in the dark. what a night that was! I went home to get flashlights so we could see SOMETHING while we were cleaning up. It was interesting!

Well, they keep checking on me to make sure I am ok. Other then still having a headache and asthma I am good, but having to watch who is around before I start typing on TCS! We still have the ministry of Labour man in doing continual air tests (they are still working on the roof). I was told that any time I need to get some air to just go and get some. Well, for my break I think I will go outside and sit int he fresh air - it is a beautiful day!

Thanks for the concern everyone.....now what can happen today so I can go home early again. I could use another nap!

So glad to hear you're ok Ady - if you need a nap you need to practise painting eyeballs on your eyelids, then nobody will know if they're closed. As long as your head doesn't hit the desk it will look like you're watching the computer
