I'm not sure but I think Walmart might have it. Its pine pellets and turns to sawdust the same as the feline pine.

The chicken feed tracks the same amount as most every litter. It does make a bit of a mess. For me the clumping action and not needing to do full litter box cleaning is worth the tracking but everyone has different priorities.

World's Best Cat Litter is $16.99 for 17lb. So $1 per lb.
Chicken feed is about $8.50 for 50lb. So thats $0.17 per lb.
So thats a savings of 83% if I did my math right
.
Thanks for the price info, with 7 cats we go through a ton of litter.

My crew of 5 loves the Chicken feed MASH (i think that they know the crumbles are for the hens) & to improve the clumpability I pour about 1/4 inch of Arm & Hammer Unscented Clumping over the feed. As for the wood pellets, my vet said that larger cats like JC can find the pellets painful to their paws, which is prob. why he didn't like them.
Regarding storage, I saved the clumping litter boxes (I love the heavy duty cardboard) and cut the tops on 3 sides (creating a hinge) and I pour the mash into those. Works great!
And at the price, I can just throw the litter into the garbage on a weekly basis!
For the record, I keep 2 boxes of JonnyCat Unscented Clay litter (mostly used for pee) and 1 box of straight Arm&Hammer Unscented Clumping and the other 4 boxes with the laying mash. The mash boxes are far & away the most popular!

I think one of these days (ok maybe next winter) I think I'm going to toilet train my kitties. Talk about ultimate cost saving and less mess and smell! I think it would be worth it but I know it will be time-consumign and not sure how to go about training 3 cats at once!

I absolutely love this thread as I have to deal with what kind of litter I should buy that fits into my tiny budget.

First of all, when I first got Stanley we tried the pine pellets. He seemed fine with it and although it made the house smell ok, I found it was hard to scoop because the pellets didn't fall through the holes in my scoop! It didn't track too bad and clean up was a breeze (other than the scoop).

I find with the litter I am using now, it does smell more and tracks like crazy. Also, I am also scraping the bottom of the litter box all the time and it is clumping ON the scoop when I try to clean. What an annoyance! Also Stanley doesn't scratch anything and I find that he gets a lot of buildup on his claws from the clay clumping kitty litter.

I haven't tried the chicken feed yet. I can't remember if anyone said it tracked or not....

I use the arm and hammer odor eater thing for my kitty litter... I am not really sure if it makes a difference. Well, the one difference I have seen is that if I sprinkle a little on the bottom the waste doesn't stick to the bottom of the box. But after the first scoop it goes right back to the same problem.

Where would I fine the pellets? Just at any local Wal-Mart of pet store? What about the chicken feed? Do any stores sell it or would I have to go to an actual feed thing?

Yah you would have to go to a feed store. I'd look in a phone book if you don't know where one is. As far as tracking...I don't know of many litters that don't track (crystals I think don't). So its still a problem but I would rather stick to something natural than go artificial.

The ultimate cure for not tracking litter is toilet training

We've been using the dumor egg layer crumbles chicken feed in combo with the Booda Clean Step litter box for one week and we love it. It clumps well, the litter box keeps the tracking pretty well under control, odor control is pretty good and I can't help but think the cats are enjoying the extra space and privacy they get with this litter box as opposed to their old covered box.

So we have been using chicken feed for almost a month now and it works pretty well. When we just had Jasmine, she was using feline pine, but when we got Rudy, he was used to "sandy" litter so they both started using the sandy litter. I recently tried to switch their main litter box back to feline pine and the cats wouldn't touch it. They both went to the other box that had the chicken feed in it. I liked the feline pine better but you gotta go with what the kids like!
It does track but I don't know of a litter that doesn't except feline pine and even that tracked a little. It is so cheap though, you really can't beat the price!Overall, I would recomed the chicken feed but I really wish our 2 would have liked the feline pine as much as me. Oh well, it's not my bathroom so I guess I don't have much room to complain!
