I have a friend who is pretty upset right now. I told her I'd try to get some advice about this situation for her.

For the last couple weeks she has been smelling something in the kitchen but couldn't identify it until just this morning. She has a gas leak!! Now, she's worrying because of the health issues the gas leak could have caused for her and her fur family.

She has 3 indoor cats and one cat has a heart murmur, enlarged left side and she has had labored breathing for the past couple months which means possible congesive heart failure OR can be related to the gas leak. This could take years off this poor cat's life AND others in the house.

I've told her to call her vet ASAP to see what advice they'd give for this. I thought I'd post this and see if anyone out there have had experience with this and if so, what advice would be given.

Hope to hear from u soon!

Well first I assume that the gas is turned off and theyre all out of the house, right?
I don't know if it has special implications for a cat with a heart murmur. It is bad for everyone, though. I don't know what can be done after the fact for slow, steady exposure to gas...

If the leak was mainly in the kitchen, if she kept the kitchen door closed, if she had a good air exhaust system, and if the cats mostly stayed in the upstairs rooms (if any), hopefully they did not get the full blast of the gas. She should have everybody in her home including her cats have a thorough physical checkup.

I don't know in cats, but in humans, there isn't much you can do after exposure to a gas leak. With therapy the brain may be able to rebuild, but with cats, I doubt there's much that can be done unfortunately.
