I was at one of the local Goodwill stores yesterday and there were some scanners there for instance a HP for $15, a Canon For * etc. However it was just the scanner no cables, cords, instructions etc. Would this be worth buying and installing ???

We just bought a refurbished one from factoryfirect.ca for work (I have an all in one but sometimes I just don't like to share with it being right on my desk) for $20 Canadian with the booklet, cords etc, so I would say look around for a better deal - refurbished would be better than Goodwill as you know its working and comes with a short warranty

Not the sort of deal I'd go for, either. If you're wanting to save some $$ over the price of a new one, I'd say go refurbished -- the only difference is a shorter warranty, and a plain jane box -- everything else is there. That's how I got my Canon printer, which I've had now for over 2 years, with absolutely no problem. However, that said, scanner prices are not huge: I picked up a little Canon a couple of months ago for under $100 Canadian and I couldn't be happier.

Gail, I wouldn't go for it. I have two computers - a PC with no online access that I use for "sensitive" stuff like tests and grades (I'm a teacher), and a notebook that I use to go online. The PC is hooked up to an old Mustek scanner that doesn't work half the time, and the notebook is linked to a cheap Canon scanner that works five times better than the old Mustek. Buying the software and cables would probably set you back more than buying a new scanner.

I wouldn't let the no instructions, or software bother you. HP has all that stuff on their website available for free download. Not sure about Canon, but I bet they do the same. Cables aren't that expensive. All I'd do is maybe verify that you can find the information on their site first....ie, get the model number and check it out. There does reach a point where a model is so old they take the info on it down.
