Hi: I'm new, and I'm happy to get so much information from so many 'cats' out there.

My cat has an on-and-off habit of coming into the bedroom around 4 am, and he chews papers to wake me up. Sometimes he claws at the carpet. He doesn't need anything; he has food, water, etc.

Does anyone else have a cat who chews newspapers/papers in the early AM? He doesn't eat any, just makes noise to disturb me!
Thanks, Bunnyboy

Yes, I have experienced my cat chewing papers. Also, when he seems distressed. He chewed his papers at his vet visit.

My two don't chew papers but they pounce on them, crumple them, or just continually walk on them. Anything to make noise and any paper left on the floor is fair game.

Rocky is my chewer- he seems to be slowly growing out of it a bit. He used to chew lampshades, pens (while you are using them!), cardboard.

When cookie and Suzie were younger they had a ball one night chewing up paper towels.

My exboyfriend had a cat that enjoyed shredding the sides of my books- kitty was quite young.

I think it is something that they do grow out eventually. Try giving him one of those cardboard scrachers treated with cat nip, only at night.

Thank you for your reply.
Duke is NOT a kitten. And I've started shutting him out, so the problem has been nearly solved. He seems to go for paper when he wants something, such as food.

My Duska knows that the sound of shredding paper (especially coming from my desk area LOL!) will get me up! I now leave some waste paper for her to play with on the floor, and hide my files away.

Your cat really doesn't do things simply to annoy you. Only people do that. You cat is most active at dawn and dusk and is simply looking for interesting things to hunt. I give mine a piece of white inkjet paper to play with ( thats her fav or any paper will do in an emergency) and I simply clean it up when she is done.

Cats have anazing traits but they dont do things to annoy us, that's REALLY anthropomorphizing them.

Thanks you! Yes, I have realized what you said.
I think he was just wanting some attention. He seems to chew paper if he is extra-hungry or upset (at the vet's he chewed her papers), or just wants something.
