Hello,

There's a pretty young stray that's been hanging around my backyard. I'm going to guess it's around 1 year old.

Long story short, I'm thinking of taking her in to get her spayed (I think it's a "her") . How can you tell if a cat has already been fixed ? With the boys, their testicle will be gone but how do you tell with the girls ?

Thanks
Julie

if she's a stray, you should be able to approach her. the only way i know to tell is to take her to the vet.

A stray of that age has in all likelihood not been spayed. But when you take her in, let them know that you are not 100% sure she has not been spayed. Ask them to double check for a scar before opening her up.

If the cat was spayed by a TNR program and then released back outside they would have "tipped" one of her ears, probably the right ear. So if she's missing the very tip of an ear then its likely she was spayed, but only cats that are re-released back outside are tipped.
