I wanted to try soft claws on Madden, seeing as how he's become quite the destructive monster lately, but I wanted someone to show me how to put them on first. My vet is booked full, and dosen't usually do them, so I thought I would call around for a vet/groomer that does them on a regular basis. I found a vet in my area that will put the first set on for me, but they want to charge 120 dollars, because they think they HAVE to put him under anesthesia to do it!!!

I was like what kind of vet are you anyway?? Do you put pets under to do routine shots and checkups too??

Has anyone else ever heard of this? I thought it sounded completely obsurd! I'm sure I can do it myself, I just wanted to be sure I was doing it right...Thats just crazy!

Try it yourself. Dont make that kitty be under when you do it. It really isn't that big of a deal at all. the instructions that come with them are really good.

That's definitely a little extreme. I would say try it yourself and follow the instructions. Don't expect to be able to put them all on him at once. Settle for one or two at a time and just repeat the process as many times as you need to. Also, wait for a time when he is sleepy so hopefully you've been able to accomplish at least part of the job before he really knows what's going on.

Soft Paws are made to be able to put on by the owner without vet assistant. I think that vet is outrageous in saying you have to put the cat under in order to put on soft paws nail caps.

They're nuts!

Check with the pet groomers in your area. I know someome who'd get her groomer put them on... I think they charged her $5 to $10.

I don't have to use them because so far my cats haven't been destructive but don't they get shed with the sheath? I know with the amount of sheaths I vacumn up from the cat tower and around the scratching post that would mean putting them under anesthetic on a real regular basis.

Exactly! My mom uses them on her cats & she's constantly replacing the caps as they fall off. The poor cats would have to be put under every few weeks... sheesh!
Crazy vet!

I'd be worried you'd come back to find your cat declawed for that kind of money. With the help of 2 people you can do it yourself. Not that bad. In the first few days they will remove all of themanyway and you will have to put them on frequently at first.
