This was in my local CP's newsletter, and thought I would share for people who think they are betraying their cat's memory by adopting another cat - you might want to get a tissue though.

I too, would make a will
if I could write.
To some poor, wistful, lonely
stray I leave my happy home.
My dish, my cosy bed
my cushioned chair, my toy.
The well-loved lap
The gently stroking hand
The loving voice
The place I made in someone's heart.
The love, that at the last,
Could help me to a peaceful, painless end
Held in loving arms
If I should die
Oh, do not say:
'No more a pet I'll have
To grieve me by its loss'
Seek out a lonely, unloved cat
And give my place to him.
This is my legacy
The love I leave behind
Tis all I have to give

I believe that. With every fibre of my being. But reading it certainly did bring on the waterworks.

Thank you.

Thanks for sharing!!! It took me a while to realize that it was not betraying Smokey to have gotten the boys just a week after she passed. This puts into words exactly what I'm sure she would have said (even though she hated other cats). So now I've got 4 all from the shelter.

Rang27 - I am glad to hear that, it is why I posted it. I had a phone call about Pebbles a couple of hours after having Snowy pts, and I thought it was betraying her, but had friends tell me that she wouldn't mind, and I like to think that is how she would have said it too.

I am so glad that you shared that beautiful poem! I hope it gets lots of coverage - that is the sentiment that saves lives & brings comfort. Can you believe that after losing my Miss Tobie, I didn't want to risk losing another cat? My disabled daughter bought Joey & JC as kittens, sacrificing her "boom box fund", and gave Joey to me, with JC living with us, too - and now Joey is My Guy!

Hi - a lovely poem. You might like to alter the attribution to its writer Margaret S Troughton (of Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, UK) 1918-2000. She was a relative by marriage and I knew her well. She loved cats; as I do now...

I often tell myself, when I remember that one day my own two dear cats will die, that it means I will have space to take in another cat, get to know that cat, give it a home and a friend. It's a poor excuse for a silver lining on a very dark cloud, but it's better than nothing.

That was really beautiful. I hope that my Squeakers would feel this way. After I rescue him as a baby, I made a promise not to buy any more animals, I'd only rescue my kitties, because I saved him and he loved me more than any other animal I've ever had. So now I've rescue Ollie, in memory of my Squeaky boy, who stole my heart.
Very moving booktigger, thanks.

Thank you for clarifying this... her name was obviously heard but not spelled out.
