Hi,

Thanks for reading. Just a couple of questions about my 4 day old kittens.
1. When will the babies cords drop off? Of the 5 born, only one has lost his cord.
2. Some of the kittens make a coughing sound, is this normal? They only do it when the mother cat is away from them. It is quite scary, their little bellies blow like balloons.

Thanks

All 5 kittens have names! In order of their birth.

1. Tiddler (smallest ginger, 1st born)
2. Jarfi (ginger)
3. Peter (Black Tabby)
4. Beanie (Black & White, named after his father)
5. Bonnie (Black & White, 2nd smallest)

Bonnie is the only female.

They are cute Neesey! Thanks for providing pics of them. Generally, the mom will lick the cords off several hours after birth. You can remove the cords by gently stimulating their tummies with a warm wet cloth. Do NOT cut the cord, just massage the stomach area in a round rotating manner and the cords will fall off.

There bellies bloat because they are kittens and their stomachs are growing. Each time they nurse, you will see their little bellies blow-up, then mom licks them stimulating their bowels to move and they poop and pee the stomach goes down again.

The coughing is usually the first early sounds of the babies, some just can't quite meow yet as they are still new in the world. Unless there is discharge from the eye slits and noses, or mom seems to be ill, they are just calling for her.

You should be feeding mom 3 times the amount she normally eats, and providing her with good nutritrious food so she can nurse these little guys.

Good luck with them, they are beautiful!

I don't have any advice, just wanted to tell you that the babies are beautiful! You are so lucky that your momma cat is sharing her babies with you.

Thanks for the pics! We would all love to watch them grow up!

Hi,

Thanks for the kind words. I think her babes are beautiful too!

4 of the kittens still have the black longish cord attached. Lucy lets me pick them up, so I will see if I can have a go at getting them off later.

I will deffo take more pics, Im trying to take a picture every few days, to record their progress.

They are now 5 days old.

Thanks again,
Neesey xx

"The coughing is usually the first early sounds of the babies, some just can't quite meow yet as they are still new in the world. Unless there is discharge from the eye slits and noses, or mom seems to be ill, they are just calling for her. "

The babies only do this when asleep. Sometimes looks like they are having trouble breathing (?)

"You should be feeding mom 3 times the amount she normally eats, and providing her with good nutritrious food so she can nurse these little guys."

Im feeding her as she demands food. She isnt taking more food, in fact less. (4 (Kitten) pouches a day when pregnant, 3 (kitten) a day now) Although the babies, never cry (well not much). She is also taking cat milk. And the babes seem happy.

Am I doing okay??

HELP!!

You are doing the best you can do, it is always wise to take the family in to get vet checked though. Always good to be safe now then sorry later....

In feeding mom cat more, i meant in times not amounts. Feed her 6 times a day in small amounts versus three times a day in large amounts.

Just one thing to add, leave the cords alone. They will come off by themselves. It can take up to 2 weeks for them to fall off

Neesey, your mommy cat looks like my mommy cat!

Her name is Peaches, and we kept all her younguns, they are about 2 1/2 years old now. They were about six months old in this pic - yeah, they were still "nursing" on dried-up teats!

What's your mommy cat's name? Are you hoping to keep some of the babies?

They are cute! What kind of breed are they? American Shorthair? The one marlbed looks like a bengal because of it's pattern I'd love to have an orange marbled cat

Did you mean my kittens?

If you did, the ginger ones are just ginger! I live in England, and I dont think we have American shorthair over here (?) I may of course be wrong!

The father cat is black and white, and although Lucy is a grey tabby, she has a lot of ginger flecks in her fur. She's not a pedigree cat, neither is the father.

Too much in-breeding going on there!

Phoned my local Cat Welfare lady last night, who is getting Lucy spayed, along with my kittens as they get old enough. Good bonus for their future owners!
