Hi there,

Too many cats is when you can't afford to care for them - either with time or money.

I currently have five cats and one kitten, our stud is leaving tomorrow - he's going to be desexed and live out his life on a farm. The kitten will leave in a few months when he's old enough.

I think I will be comfortable with four desexed cats.

Yer right, the problem with the old lady was the cats ran the house not her, she offered me a sandwich after wiping the knife she had just put the cat food out with on her apron

LOL sounds like my Nana's house. I've often wondered as I've picked up a knife or a fork from the sink before if it's been used for cat food - although we aren't currently feeding wet food.

Nice to meet you!

too many cats? I don't understand that concept

lol, kidding. Too many is when you can't take care of them, in the way of needs and hygene, and of course when it comes to finances. For an old lady like that, she can't take care of that many cats!

I have 4 right now, and I would love more, but I know I can't afford it, and the older 3 are pretty easy, but my baby is a handful as she has a litterbox, fur that travels and loads of energy, lol. I guess only people with a great deal of money and a big place can afford "too many cats".

Four is my limit. I can afford more, I suppose, but that's the limit as far as litter box, food and cleaning duties go. If you can keep up after more, I would say go for it.

I also agree that too many cats are when you have too many to care for correctly. Care includes food, attention and vet care.
I am owned by two cats.

I think 2 is my limit as Maverick doesnt really get on with other cats that well due to being poorly socalised as a kitten.

I would love more though.

I always said three was my limit, then the two boys were dumped on my doorstep last September. I did try to find them homes but it is impossible here. So they have joined the family, and I love them. Five is a handful for me, I have to admit, not financially (at least not while we still in Bosnia) but I do find it hard to give each of them the attention individually that they need. Maybe in the summer, when I will be (more!) retired, it will be easier.

Yes, I also agree that it doesn't depend on the # of cats you have, but how well you are able to care for them and pay some attention to them and everything. So even 2 cats, for some people, may be too many if they don't have the time or money.

Sounds to me like 8 is too many for that lady though!

I agree with everyone else... it varies from person to person. I have 6 & for me that is my limit, mainly because of the cat hair. With most of my cats long hair, I already spend a lot of my time vacuuming!

That's exactly my thoughts as well.

I honestly think 4 should have been my limit. But I have 6. Actually I had 7 for the longest time, but I finally gave my little Merlot to my old roomate. I originally found her but she was always both of ours. Then when she moved out she decided she just wanted one cat and I can keep Merlot. Well Merlot kept getting beaten up by my other cats. They just wanted to rough play and she never did, but she wouldn't defend herself so she kept getting scratched on ehr nose. I knew she wasn't happy here. When people would come over, you wouldn't even know she was here, she would hide the whole time. When I gave her Jill, my old roomate, I took her to Jill's house and she fit right in immediately, even with their dog amazingly. She cuddled up to the dog and Jill's other cat Fluffy who she had when she lived with me. She is like a whole new cat, greets everyone at the door and everything. She loves people, just not the swarm of other cats pushing her down like at my house. Anyways...long story there...

I am about to move to a bigger house in the country so my two that so badly want out can go out and explore. And my others can be happily inside with a load of room to explore, lots of bedrooms and hopefully a screened porch. So 6 will be a little more comfortable.

Plus I am hoping to find a house with a barn, so more cat possibilities there.

I have 3 housecats, a foster with 6 kittens (all temporary, they will be adopted out when old enough), and 2+ outside. 8 permanent inside cats would be too much for me, but temporarily having extras as fosters is fun. I do know my cats get less attention when the fosters are here, though.

I pity the old lady's cats. Cats don't like a stinky house...if it was up to them, their litterboxes would be kept clean!

I have 8 also, 6 are ones i rescued from a busy shopping center parking lot, 8 I rescued and I found homes for 2, it took me a year to get them plus 8 others, last one was sissy who came with 5 baby girls, I had everyone all 16 spayed 12 girls, 4 neutered, shots, tested, and wormed with the help of Actors and Friends for animals, they paid most of the spay and neuter and also Helping out pets everyday H.O.P.E ) and donations that I received from people that I didn't even know plus friends and family, It was hard for me to give up the 2 I did, and I must be nutts for sure. It's a blessing just knowing they are safe and cared for makes it all worth while, and I Love them Dearly. It took me a year to get them all out of that parking lot. I went everyday for a year to feed them. and I said I wouldn't ever give up till I got them all, and I did, it was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life trapping and just making sure they were all ok, I never realized how hard a job rescue people do, My hubby was a great help but I was the one to trap them all take them to the vet and I have alway's taken care of them by myself. I dont think anyone does it for pats on the back it's just about careing, It's just about the cats.I made a promise to see to it that I would take care of them it's tough. But looking at there sweet faces everyday is worth the effort. But to add I don't want anymore,
Not now anyway

i know i am - but i don't think i'll be getting anymore for quite a while. i live in a small [927 square ft] 2-bed 1-bath house, & i've run out of 'litterbox places'. just bought a 3rd, & put it in one of the closets that already had a box. so one closet has 2 boxes, 1 closet has 1 box, & the other closet has my clothes. no room in the bath for a box, so no room for any more kitties!
