Did you know that most cases of severe animal cruelty in the U.S. go unpunished or the criminal just gets a slap on the wrist? I'm sure you agree that probation or a $100 fine is not a fitting punishment for someone who deliberately tortures an animal.
The Coalition for Animal Justice works with SPCA officials and prosecutors to get the toughest possible sentences for animal abusers. We are also working for a federal law that would impose a mandatory minimum 5 year prison sentence for anyone who commits an act of cruelty to a companion animal (whether or not the animal has a home). Additionally, we are working to promote public awareness of the extreme lack of justice for animal victims of violent crimes. Only a very small percentage of those convicted receive jail time, and even then the sentence is way too short.
